Does anyone know of any good (Catholic) commentary on the Book of Songs? I’m looking for good theology books on this topic or the book in the Bible in general

The Spiritual Cancticles by Saint John of the Cross is written in a similar manner.

I have this book - The Song of Songs, A Mystical Exposition by Fr. Juan G. Arintero, O.P.
It’s a large book, 571 pages, but very good. Fr. goes through the Song of Songs verse by verse, giving lengthy commentary which includes quotes from saints. Must admit however that I haven’t read the whole volume. Your post has prompted me to pull it off the shelf and continue reading it.

Are you familiar at all with mystical writing? Song of Songs is about one’s soul and the experiences on the path to mystical union/marriage with Our Lord.
It can also be applied to Our Lord’s union with the Church. The online Haydock Bible (Douay translation) includes commentary about this union in it’s footnotes. You can read it here. It’s called “Canticle of Canticles” in the Douay. The link will take you to an Introduction chapter. Just click on “Next chapter” to continue.

There is a spiritual level of meaning to the text in which the Groom is Christ, the Bride is the Church, and the Chorus is those who are not yet mature in the Faith. For example:
{1:1} Bride: May he kiss me with the kiss of his mouth.

Here the bride is the Church, who constantly seeks the love of the Christ and hopes for His blessings.

Read St John of the Cross, “The Spiritual Canticle.”

He uses the correct theology of the Song of Song in explaining his poem.

Peter Kreeft’s Three Philosophies of Life is a very accessible explication of Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Songs. Highly recommended.
