P.S. Should’ve mentioned this is from Debbie Davies’ blues album “Tales from the Austin Motel” featuring Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon who were founding members of Double Trouble. Had to find the CD to make the correct references and enjoy listening to it again.

Thanks for sharing this blues classic. To me it is a haunting vocal hymn about our shared human condition. I used to listen to a blues night on a local radio station. The DJ would play both contemporary and legendary blues artists. He was knowledgeable not only about music style but its history as well. I remembered hearing the name Blind Willie Johnson but had to go to YouTube in order to listen to Dark Was th Night. Awesome story that it was selected as one of the songs put aboard Voyager I. BW Johnson may have had a troubled and tragic life yet the representation of his soulful voice continues to soar above this cold ground that he left decades ago.
