Open Up Your Heart and Let the Sunshine In
——— The McGuire Sisters
—Mommy told me something a little kid should know.
—It’s all about the devil and I’ve learned to hate him so.
—She says he causes trouble if you let him in the room.
—He will never, ever leave you if your heart is filled with gloom.

(Chorus) So let the sunshine in! Face it with a grin!
Smilers never lose, and frowners never win!
So let the sunshine in! Face it with a grin!
Open up your heart, and let the sunshine in!
—When you are unhappy, the devil wears a grin.
—But, oh! he starts to running when the light comes pouring in!
—I know he’ll be unhappy, ‘cause I’ll never wear a frown.
—Maybe IF we keep on smiling, he’ll get tired of hangin’ ‘round.

(Repeat chorus.)
Since we’re in troubling times, maybe it would do us all well to listen to an upbeat recording online and teach the words to all in the family. When depression and despair are on your doorstep, forcing yourself to sing this little song of repudiation of the devil and gloom really DOES help. Been there. Done that. Sometimes it helps to sing it over and over, especially when by yourself. It’s great to sing at the start of a family car trip, too—helps to set an optimistic, cooperative tone.
