Songs for babies

I have a new 3-month-old granddaughter. My wife, a retired elementary school teacher, knows a lot of secular-type songs. I’d like to sing some Catholic/religious oriented songs to her. I’ve been singing “Jesus Loves Me,” but would like to sing some other ones.

Any ideas?
 
I don’t know how widely available the CDs are, but there is a Catholic preschool music program called “Making Music Praying Twice” that has a lot of songs like that.

The only song I can think of at the moment is “Father Abraham,” but there’s a lot more.
 
Just about any Catholic song (from the hymnal, for example) will be fine. You don’t need to sing “nursery” songs exclusively.

When my son was an infant and toddler, he never heard the usual baby songs. He grew up with folk songs from around the world (his parents are both musicians), and he’d sing along in his own babyish way.

My friend’s nieces and nephews were singing the Salve Regina before the age of 3 😃

What’s important is that you sing to your precious granddaughter. Sing Bob Dylan; sing songs of the Church season; sing the Beatles; sing Hildegard von Bingen; sing the “Rubber Ducky” song; sing Celtic ballads… Just sing. You will be creating synaptic connections in her growing brain no matter what you sing 🤓

But most importantly, you will be creating lifelong memories, treasures that are irreplaceable and beyond value! 👍

This is very true–just sing! Best memories I have of childhood are songs of all types.

One thing we do in our family is hum a repetitive tune to colicky babies, and eventually I find myself singing the words to a prayer to that same repetitive tune I was humming. Singing prayers not only helps kids learn common and not so common Catholic prayers, but it also helps parents and caregivers keep calm while dealing with chaos, tantrums and bad attitudes. You can also sing catechism lessons. A second grade CCD teacher my kids had years ago had a cd that was full of catechism songs. If you google catholic children songs it might come up, or possible other CDs or DVDs will.

Kids, and especially babies, don’t care what you sing or how well you sing. They just love that you take the time to entertain them, teach them, comfort them, or invite them to play. Music can be adapted to nearly any situation
 
I just want to say how endearing it is to hear about a Grandpa planning songs to sing to his granddaughter. Very sweet, may God bless you both!

At that age, you can change the words to “Joseph Loves Me”, “Mary Loves Me”, “Moses Loves Me”, -]“Judas Loves Me”/-], and the like, and BAM! - whole new song.

I like the idea of songs from Mass, especially catchy tunes. “You are Mine” always seemed appropriate.
 
I have been singing the alphabet song to my granddaughter since she was tiny. she is 8 months now. granted that is not necessarily Catholic-but she loves it. sometimes I make up songs about God, Jesus, lambs, children, etc. I like to pray the rosary with her too.
 
The Praise Baby cd is pretty good.

As far as other Catholic songs that babies seem to like, I tend toward “Sing of Mary,” “All Creatures of Our God and King,” and “Hail Holy Queen.”
 
Aww, I love these responses…and I don’t “got no” kids. I remember my mother singing to me when I was small and wish I could hear her again. Pray for all good mothers and parents.
 
I find “Shall We Gather at the River” soothing for babies.

Oh, I’m sure we’ll do the alphabet song. It will probably be the Sesame Street version. We played it so many times, and my son sang it so many times, it is one of the frequent “earworms” I get from time to time!😃

Thanks. Two of my favorite memories is singing Christmas carols around the piano every Christmas, and the times my uncles and father played the piano, guitar, etc. together. I would have been one happy camper in the Darling household (a bluegrass-playing family from the Andy Griffith Show)!

It’s on Amazon, but it’s quite expensive ($35). I’ll consider it, thanks!

Super Why has their own version of the ABC song too, but I like the traditional. I have not heard the Sesame Street version

No, I listen to them with the kids/babies at random on Pandora, but I find that I often end up “liking” them so the songs appear frequently. Go by the reviews or which songs you like best if you’re going top pick one.

I didn’t realize I had linked to the DVD; I think they also have them as cds.

We love Jewel’s “Gloria” song, Celtic Woman’s “The Blesaing”, and Nick Lachey’s “God Speed” are our favorites … I try to sing with Celtic Women, but do not dare try singing Jewel’s Gloria (it’s too lovely as it is) … Maddona’s Lullaby “Little Star” brings God into the song with love.
