Songs with Christian Themes by Secular Artists

A friend and I were talking this morning about how a lot of popular music artists who aren’t specifically trying to make “Christian rock” still write/ perform songs that have Christian themes. Usually these songs are way better than most “Christian Rock” in our humble opinions. Often the artists in question had some pretty significant personal struggles, so I hope Jesus helped them in their hour of need.

I see there are two past threads on this from 2015 and 2007 but they’re both locked, so let’s make a new thread and post your favorites.

Here’s a couple we were talking about, to start

Does this qualify? I really liked it many years ago. I was looking for a new chart song that’s recently got a lot about heaven, hell etc but I can’t find it.

Songs like that being all over the radio, from a UK artist yet, are just a reminder of how many people are looking for God, or something

This whole song is pretty much Help me God, Help me Jesus, over and over. I understand the songwriter had almost died twice from pneumonia and liver disease when he wrote it.

Bob Dylan had three Christian albums. Also he has songs with Christian imagery peppered throughout his discography

Bokbok

To list some Dream Theater songs:
  • The whole Twelve-Step Suite (Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil, Repentance, and The Shattered Fortress)
  • Surrender to Reason
  • Ministry of Lost Souls
  • Surrounded
  • The whole of The Astonishing has various themes that Christians might find attachment to. Some are pretty on-the-nose.
  • I Walk Beside You
  • In the Presence of Enemies (technically based on a manga, but the manga had many Christian themes in it)
  • This is the Life
Some other ones I can think of quickly are:
  • The Cross and You - Avantasia (Avantasia’s The Mystery of Time in general is very much about dealing with spiritual doubts)
  • The Dark Ride - Helloween
  • Final Fortune - Helloween
  • Anthem - Kamelot

This song got me through a lot of hard times in high school. I always imagined Cher was Jesus singing to me. Probably heretical now that I think of it 😂

Love Without End Amen

And from the other side of spiritual things (Dave wrote the song AFTER his conversion of course)

It is not uncommon to find spiritual themes in country music. Here are a couple of my favorites.

“Blessed” by Martina McBride.

“Keeper of the Stars” by Tracy Byrd.

This is true. I always liked Martina’s “Independence Day” which starts out with Amazing Grace and has all kinds of Biblical stuff in it.

The thing is, the country music audience kind of expects a lot of God references. Rock audience maybe not so much, unless it’s some act like Pedro the Lion maybe. It’s the unexpected places Jesus pops up, that always gave me hope
