Soul Question

Hi there,

Just considering the human soul in light of my involvement in certain issues like reproductive and fetus rights, morality, law, equality etc.

I believe I have a have an immortal soul, given by God, that will continue to exist after death. Although I’ve not considered this deeply, I would say that the longing in me to be free and have a joyful eternal life is real and originates from a real cause, i.e, my soul.

I’m interested in how others personally view this and how they came to the conclusion of whether they have a soul or not. I understand there is much Church teaching on this, so I’m asking for a more personal response. I would like to ask two simple questions-

Do you believe you have an immortal soul?

How did you come to believe in your soul or not?

Because our minds have features not found in any other species. Not even evolutionary traces of these features like our sense of beauty, infinity, justice and our mortal destiny.

We can trace the evolution of our bodies to other animals but our minds are unique. Even our brains are not so unique because there are sophisticated brains in other species too (like dolphins and whales). But even their superbrains don’t produce minds similar to ours.

Our minds are unique because they have an enhancer: the immortal soul created directly by God from nothing.

1. Yes until today.
2. That’s what I was told.
   Since then I’ve had an out of body experience to confirm my soul continues after death. As far as being immoral, I don’t know if there is anything out there in the universe that can kill a soul.

How did you come to believe in your soul or not?

No, because scripture says so:

“All the elements of reality are soulless.”
When one realises this by wisdom,
then one does not heed ill.
This is the Path of Purity.

– Dhammapada 20:7

In Buddhism the point is to avoid immortality, not to seek it. The First Noble Truth tells us that life is Suffering, and the other three tell us how to avoid that suffering in future. Immortality makes that suffering unavoidable.

yes.

How did you come to believe in your soul or not?

The Church taught me that we do have souls which do not die.

My thought on this was no doubt influenced by this teaching. And when I ponder on it, I believe that we are more than just lumps of flesh or artificial intelligence, and that behind our physical existence there is something permanent that belong to another realm. These are the spiritual beings which we cannot see and touch and live in another dimension different from ours. That would how I see it from science perspective but as far as belief in Church teaching there is no problem at all for me.

I’ve lived a fairly long life… not as long as some but long enough and along with living this life is a consciousness and sense of my identity that’s been present from my earliest years. I would attribute to this consciousness and sense of identity as a soul.Along with the soul is a perspective that becomes clearer I think with time and experience that we… our identity continues beyond this physical dimension of space and time. *We are associated with our bodies but not connected to them physically… Our cells over time replace themselves.
