Soul sleep is a term for the belief in mortality of the soul: that the soul dies and the dead sleep unconsciously between the death of the body and the resurrection on Judgment Day.

Anyone here believes this? Care to share your thoughts? Thanks!

🙂

I do not see how a faithful and informed Catholic can believe in this.

Isn’t this belief found mostly in the Seventh Day Adventist groups?

JW’s believe this

Yes, I believe this, because it’s confirmed in the bible. Here is confirmation of this fact: remnantofgod.org/Immortal.htm

It is really easy to prove nearly any preconceived idea by cherry-picking verses and removing their context. If it was correct, why was this not “discovered” for more than 1800 years and something the Jews themselves never bought into?

In Luke 16 we have the story of Lazarus and the Rich Man. In part
. . .22* The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25* But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ . . .
They don’t sound or act like they are asleep.

That is a blatantly ‘anti-Catholic’ website. :onpatrol:
Wow! I did not notice that before. That is really seriously anti-Catholic. The “RCC Exposed” link at the top is chock full of vile lies about the Church.

If I am not mistaken, it is against forum rules to post links to blatantly anti-Catholic sights.

Thank you for catching that.

Sure I believe it, because the bible proclaims it.

Ez.18:3As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.
4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Psa 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Ecc 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

And Jesus proclaims it.

Jn.11: 11These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

As for the Old Testament references, if they were ‘asleep’, why did Christ preach the Gospel to the dead?

**1Pe 3:18 Because Christ also died once for our sins, the just for the unjust: that he might offer us to God, being put to death indeed in the flesh, but enlivened in the spirit,
1Pe 3:19 In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison:
1Pe 3:20 Which had been some time incredulous, when they waited for the patience of God in the days of Noe, when the ark was a building: wherein a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water.

1Pe 4:6 For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to the dead: That they might be judged indeed according to men, in the flesh: but may live according to God, in the Spirit.**

Are those in the following story, also proclaimed by Jesus, ‘asleep’?

Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and feasted sumptuously every day.
Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, full of sores,
Luk 16:21 Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. And no one did give him: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. And the rich man also died: and he was buried in hell.
Luk 16:23 And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom:
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And besides all this, between us and you, there is fixed a great chaos: so that they who would pass from hence to you cannot, nor from thence come hither.
Luk 16:27 And he said: Then, father, I beseech thee that thou wouldst send him to my father’s house, for I have five brethren,
Luk 16:28 That he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torments.
Luk 16:29 And Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets. Let them hear them.
Luk 16:30 But he said: No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will do penance.
Luk 16:31 And he said to him: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, if one rise again from the dead.

And Richard, do you think that Jesus spoke ‘literally’ in John 11? It begs the question, why is this ‘literal’ and John 6 ‘symbolic’?

If “soul sleep” is correct, what exactly did God (that is Jesus Christ) mean when he said to the Good thief crucified with him, “This day you shall be with Me in Paradise.”?

Are you trying to say that God is misleading people?

I remember when I was a Seventh-day Adventist desperately trying to convince myself soul sleep was true, I used to read the pamphlets about how it was a pagan belief that souls are immortal and all this stuff. I never fully believed it and since RCIA I’ve completely abandon this idea.

I’m actually with “the 10 kings” on this one. I read through alot of those things on the website, regardless of how ‘anti catholic’ they were. I have not found anything to be a straight up lie yet. Just because somethings anticatholic doesn’t automatically make it wrong. For instance, I got trash from some guy who was accusing me of celebrating a pagan holiday(christmas). Even though it was antichristian, I looked up the history behind it, and i discovered that he was right. So i encourage you catholics to atleast consider the possibility this stuff being correct.

According to your private interpretation of scriptures?

It was wrong and to post it on these forums is against the rules of the forum.

I have considered much of the venomous anti-Catholic rhetoric, such as was on that website. You see, I was a Protestant. I have considered that which is true and it’s Catholicism.

Why did Jesus tell the thief in Luke 23:43 that they’re going to Heaven that day, and then three days later tell Mary He hasn’t gone yet? Some say this proves the Bible contradicts itself. However, the fact of the matter is, many years after the King James Bible was written, punctuation was added to it. The coma in Luke 23:43 is actually mis-placed. It should be placed after the word “today.” If it is left before the word “today,” it appears Jesus is being dishonest either to Mary or the thief on the cross. However, if it is placed correctly after the word “today”, He is now telling them both His truth and no contradiction is assumed. Now read Luke 23:43 with the coma in the correct place…

“And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee To day, shalt thou be with me in paradise.” [Luke 23:43]

See the difference?

Celebrating Christmas is pagan? Jesus is pagan now?

The thing I quoted is moot because the Bible was around for 1300 years before the KJV. The KJV came out 200 years after the Douay-Rheims in the English speaking countries. If one is going to go with an English translation, at least use the FIRST English translation (though, please, look into how the Bible was written and translated the first 500 years of Christianity…)

No Jesus is not pagan. The holiday itself is. First off let me say that i believe in the whole God sending his Son for us thing, and i believe that we should celebrate it. However it never says in the bible which day this was, and so we just assume its during winter? If you read about christmas u will discover its pagan orgins including christmas trees and such, so thats why i refuse to only celebrate the national holiday which has turnes into a marketing holiday.
