Souls in Heaven/Purgatory?

Hey everyone it has been years since I was a new member… But I had a question.

Recently, a loved one of mine died. He was very special to me and I have been in mourning since. It feels so lonely without him.

Anyway, I had a question if he can see me and hear me? I have seen many posts regarding this and signs point to yes, even if they can see the corruption here… They see it differently. But I wanted to confirm this? I know they are there for God, obviously, but can see Earth as well and hear us. (Obviously never using mediums or things like that.)

Secondly, is it possible for them to send signs here? Such as a cardinal bird flying? Before his death, I never saw cardinal birds here. If I did, maybe once. Maybe even twice but I doubt that.
Since then I have seen Cardinal bird. Also just a few other things but I won’t mention everything.

It has been very difficult without him… So it would be nice to be able to think these things. I pray to God, etc.
 
Many of us see some signs after a loved one’s death. I don’t want to go into the details, which are personal, but there have been several instances in my own family (Irish family). I had my own experience of it after my mother died.

We don’t know exactly what people who have died might “see” but it’s entirely possible that God could send a message to us or that they might ask him to do so.

Pray for the person’s soul and have confidence. One should not be asking for signs all the time but if you happened to get a couple then give thanks to God and like I said pray for the soul. If the soul is already in Heaven then your prayers can help another soul who needs prayers and maybe has no one to pray for them. I always ask God to please just apply the prayers to a deceased person who needs them if the person I am praying for is already in Heaven.
 
I know that souls in Heaven can hear us and intercede for us. I don’t know about souls in purgatory. I’m also not sure about souls in Heaven sending signs to those of us still on Earth. Perhaps God sends us signs on their behalf?

First, I’m sorry for your loss. I’m pretty sure the entire Church Triumphant is aware of what is happening here on Earth. You can look to Our Lady’s apparitions and to the Communion of Saints. The saints in Heaven are praying for us, so I would assume they would have to have some knowledge of our circumstances and actions in order to pray for us. I don’t think the Church has defined what specifically they know, though.

It’s interesting you mention cardinal birds. Both my family and my wife’s family have taken seeing cardinal birds as signs of passed loved ones. I wonder if anyone else does the same…
If it is possible for the Queen of Heaven to appear to us and send us signs, I would assume that God would allow other saints to appear to us as well. The whole signs thing reminds me there is a book by Fr. F.X. Schouppe that chronicles plenty of stories about souls in Purgatory appearing to those still on Earth begging for suffrages from the Church Militant. The book has both an Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur.
It’s good that you’re cautious about contacting mediums as that would be a grave sin to do so.

Yes, it is absolutely possible for both, for them to see us and for them to communicate with us in any way. It is also possible for us to see Souls from Purgatory sometimes. In fact some people’s purgatory is spent here on earth. However the catch is this has to be by permission from God. He has to say, okay you (the deceased) can do whatever it is that interacts with the living.

But there is so much we don’t know, the examples I could give you are only those which are confirmed and found not to be in contrast with what the Church believes. Birds, and other such things, I don’t think there is a way we can truly know that is from our loved ones.

Unless an agreement was struck before death.

For instance, there have been several cases where people have agreed “whoever dies first will ask God permission to do “x”” and then after one of them dies the agreement is allowed to be honored by God.

It has been very difficult with the loss of him. It just feels so empty. I haven’t been good… But I do take care of myself at least.

I am happy to know I am not alone in this. That he can see/hear me, in a special way that God allows.

I probably have another question regarding this but I can’t think of it. I’ll have to update it when I have time.

I guess I asked because people say that the soul is asleep until Judgement Day, others say that they kind of remember us, others debate that they do know what is going on and that they are a cloud of witnesses like an arena cheering us on? It all seems so confusing for me in that way? That is why I was wondering and hoping he can hear/see me.

There is no soul sleep.
That is mainly the beliefs of Jehovah Witnesses and Seventh-Day Adventists and some other groups.
 
I am currently reading “Purgatory, explained by the lives and legends of the Saints”, published by Tan Books. The author is (was) Fr. F.X. Shouppe, SJ and written in 1893.

Last re-printed in 1994. Over 350, 000 copies were sold. It has the Nihil obstat and Imprimatur, October 11, 1893.

It is a fascinating look at Purgatory. Can’t hardly put it down.

That assumes they are saved and we will be saved. We can hope and pray our loved ones are saved but we do not know that. Neither do we know in advance that we will be saved.

With God all is possible. We have in scripture one extreme case of the crucified thief Dismas, who because of his penitence was accepted into heaven. But this is a glimpse of what is possible for those who receive Christ’s infinite mercy and please God.

Doctrine states that we are judged, and we are either cleansed in purgatory to the state of acceptance into heaven, or we are sent to our choice of eternal death. Some are accepted when they die with no stay in purgatory, or a very short one having lived a life of friendship with God.

But we have cases where loved ones in such a state are allowed to visit or send final messages.

A word of caution. It is important not to get too drawn into these phenomena, as the devil also uses this modus to carry out trickery on over curious individuals. Best to just keep a memory of him in your heart, and if you prefer, to assist him in this world such as by having a mass said for him, or extra prayers, or in whatever means that is suitable.

You are fortunate to have had such a close friend. 🙂

People in the hereafter, in Heaven or Purgatory, have a more perfect knowledge of the world than we do, since our universal mission of doing good in the world only begins in this life, but it takes off fully in the next. In the Apocalypse of John it says that those in heaven will serve in His temple forever. We have no idea of the thousand times a thousand ways that saints and angels are helping us at every second we are awake or asleep, or how hopeless it would be without them. They love us so deeply and so purely and with a passion we cannot understand.

It is possible - at the will of God - for those in Heaven to give us signs. God can do anything, and he will do anything if it is beneficial for our salvation. Generally, he strongly avoids miracles, since as we see in the Gospels, this has a tendency to make people presumptuous or to look at God from the angle of his usefulness to us, rather than to love Him for who he is. But, there are special circumstances where he will perform miracles or miraculous signs. This was particularly frequent and necessary in the very early Church when she was tiny and vulnerable, but miracles and signs still occur today.

I just bought this book on my Kindle Fire. I find stories of purgatory fascinating. I’m going to start reading it either tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

BTW, the last few books I have bought from Amazon have come from tips from CAF users.

Yes to the first part, dating back to the second book of Maccabees chapter

On the second part: only God knows for sure. But God CAN DO any “good thing”

Speak ,to the one you Love,for they are listing ,and even are with us to watch that we live a good life according too God ,we can,t see them tell,we pass away ,some people end up in Purgatory to pay their debt ,and that,s why we must always pray for the Soul,s in Purgatory.
