Are any of you or family and friends affected by the extreme cold we are hearing of on the news ?
:pray:t2:praying for people’s safely

Woohoo. It got up to a minus 5F. today. We’re ok, and it will warm up a little tomorrow. I’m glad it’s a fast moving system here because the heating system isn’t designed for this.

There are others in worse situations; I pray for their safety.

Minus all day today, windchill -40. Schools are closed for the entire week now. Doctor offices, businesses, everything is closed.

And how are you in your neck of the world? Our son’s in-laws live in NSW. They said it was hot but not too unusual.

Doing pretty well thanks,it’s a cool morning of 20C
It did reach about 37C yesterday ,looking forward to Autumn 🙂

Will have a wind chill factor of -34 tonight or tomorrow. Not really paying attention to the numbers, it’s just bitterly cold, that’s all I know!

Well, we had a daytime high of 30 Fahrenheit, (just below freezing for our metric-system-using friends), which isn’t so bad, but the wind blows right through you.
Then, for about a half-hour we had a snow squall so bad we couldn’t see past like two feet from the window.
Just cold and weird.

Current windchill is -45F. Everything is closed, including postal deliveries.

My Haitian co-workers all want to move back to the islands!

In the northwest it has been very, very warm since Christmas. Which is expected when there’s a dip in the jetstream in the middle of the country. But temps in Jan usually average around 32F but this year its been 42 all month

But your Springs, Summers and Autumns are so worth it …you’ll have to keep reminding them ! 😸

I come from a part of the US that has extreme cold and deep snow from time to time. Actually it was a pretty common occurrence about 40-50 years ago when I was young, is less common now and some say that’s due to global warming. If you don’t have a job where you have to be outdoors, it’s not that big of a deal. I felt badly for my friend who is a mail carrier and had to work, he was so bundled up people said he looked like Randy from “A Christmas Story”.

Mostly this type of weather just makes me chuckle about when I was a dumb young college kid and went out in fishnet stockings in similar temps to go see some band play. I remember coming out of the venue in the middle of the night and running down the road to get back in my boyfriend’s car because my legs and indeed my entire bottom half (in a short dress) was SO COLD. It was maybe -8 F but with a 20 degree wind chill.

Today it was 14 F out which by my standards is a normal cold temp for January and is not as cold as my hometown in a different part of the country (where my friend was carrying mail), but there must have been wind chill here because I washed my hair before church, then went outside for a maximum of 2 minutes with damp hair and no hat to empty the cat pan and get in the car to go to church, and within 2 minutes my hair froze.

Yeah, I’ve been mostly in Philadelphia/ Wilmington area all month and the weather has been so nice here, I’ve been going out in a hoodie or a sports jersey almost every day. Only had to wear my winter coat maybe 3 times, today was one of them.

:scream_cat:Frozen hair!
I think -9C is the coldest I’ve ever experienced …in your Fall over there .It was kind of horrible.

Hereditarily, my ancestors all come from the north of Europe, and they all moved to cold, snowy places in North America when they crossed the Atlantic. My skin is very, very fair. I don’t like hot weather or too much sun. In snow if I have to run out to take out the trash or grab something from my car, I’ll often go barefoot because it’s better traction and because having to put on boots is a hassle. I don’t stay out there more than a couple minutes though.

That makes sense .I wonder if it’s my Irish heritage that makes me detest being landlocked away from the sea ,I like to have it with reach.
:smiley:I’m just picturing you running out in the snow barefoot! I run around barefoot at home, but last week the earth was too hot to stand for more than a few seconds.

First off wind chill is a joke. The temp is the temp. Coldest I’ve been is 40 below at a ski resort in Montana. But growing up, 20 and 25 below was common.

It was in the 70’s today where I live - the
desert southwest. I would not be happy with such brutally cold weather.

It was actually really nice today in California…I’ll see myself out…

I’ve definitely been in situations where I would have been much more comfortable had I prepared for wind chill. It may not matter much when you’re already bundled up, but it can make a difference when deciding how much you need to wear.

Yeah. Wind can be cold and can whisk away body heat, but wind chill is not the temperature. Our media loves it because the numbers are so shocking but Chicago area at negative 20 is really not that shocking if you think about it.
