Sour Clothes

My step mom’s towels get that sour smell. We buy her new towels all the time! LOL IMO nothing gets that smell out! I know her problem is the well water and the fact that she will leave things in her washer forever! Knowing that with her, I would rather just buy her new towels every time I visit. 😃
 
I have used Amway products since my twins were born. I had only one set of clothes and was washing them constantly. They
had a rash everywhere the clothes touched their skins (skin was
very delicate since they were a month early). A friend came to see
them and said she thought it was the detergent even though I had
used the “baby” detergents. She said the problem was that the
detergent were not completely washing out of the clothes. She
said to “clean” the washer the first time I used the Amway with
only the detergent and run it through the whole cycle. There were
tons of suds and it left the washer clean as a whistle. I have
since found the same thing with the dishwasher. That residue can
get to stinking up the clothes. The washer repairman (underwear
got tangled up and froze the motor) told me the pipes were very
clean, no gunk built up. I’m one who will use something until it no
longer works, so I’m still with the company though with detergent
that has an extra ingredient. Oh, I rarely use fabric sheets and
the clothes are still soft.
Hope you find the solution. Washing clothes and not having them
smell clean is the pits.
 
Something else may be that the clothes are not completely dry when you put them away. I notice that smell more when I’ve put away clothes that dh and I both said ‘oh, this is dry, it just feels cold’–when in fact they were really damp. Also, when it is really humid the sheets and towels smell that way more often.

Try all these good washing suggestions, but also make sure everything is really dry before closing it up in closets or drawers.
 
add a few drops of dettol to your final rinse , or a 1/2 cup of white vinegar.go well
 
for all those who say add vinegar in the washing machine (i have the same issue as the OP), wouldnt it harm the machine?

Nope.
Actually, running a hot wash with no clothes and just vinegar will help break down any soap residue in the drum.

Is any type of vinegar fine or is there a specific type of vinegar that should be used in the wash?

White vinegar.
The apple cider will not work as well. If you are using it in the wash with other clothes, I would suggest scenting it with an essential oil or an extract. Then the clothes won’t have that slight vinegar smell.

But I like the slight vinegar smell!😃
 
I’ve noticed that the rubber gasket around the drum will mildew at times, so I leave the door open for a while to let it dry. There is also a space that catches wet lint that I have to clean out periodically.

DH just isn’t fond of it. I scent our vinegar with lemon.
The floor cleaner is lemon ginger (like the method stuff), the kitchen/dish scrub is lemon… I think everything but my OCM is lemon!

I love the smell of vinegar, and I love the smell (don’t hate me, crunchy types) of Comet Cleanser!!!
 
When all else fails Febreeze them. Use Febreeze made for fabrics. I do!
 
Calgon is a water softener, found in the laundry aisle. They also make bath products, so don’t confuse the two!😛
 
Maybe try running the washing machine without any clothes in it, with the hot water and vinegar. I agree with one of the posts about getting things out into the dryer quickly. I had a problem once because I left the clothes soaking (they were really dirty) for a few hours with the top up then ran the washer. I had to rewash everything because the smell was awful. I couldn’t wear the clothes. I always use fabric softner sheets in the dryer.
Growing up, we never had a dryer. I have to be honest there is NOTHING like the smell of clothes brought in from the clothesline especially on a windy day. It was just the best smell, and always reminds me of what clean should smell like.
