I’m interested in checking out a few ancient commentaries on John’s Gospel. I’ve found commentaries from Augustine, Chrysostam, and Aquinas.

Anyone know of good online sources? I find these very helpful in preparing for my bible study.

Here are a couple websites you may find what you’re looking for.

The Fathers of the Church

Writings of the Early Church Fathers (38 Volumes)

Hope it helps.

I find the “This Is the Faith” database to be very useful:

thisisthefaith.com/

If you like to keep some volumes on hand, you simply can’t go wrong with the “Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture” series, very reasonably priced at $32.97 per volume. Very well laid out, too.

Subscriptions from the publisher are available.

I suggest using Aquinas’s Catena Aurea as a starting point for finding relevant ancient commentary. He glosses a wide variety of ancient commentary. You can find Catena Aurea widely online (google it) or on Amazon.

I use e-sword for my computer and have 16 versions of the Bible installed in it. I also have St. Thomas Aquinas’ Catena Aurea installed on it as well. All of these modules were free. I also got the Catholic commentary from there, the Haydock Catholic commentary, The Catholic encylopedia, The Catechism, Catholic Concordance and lots and lots more. It’s nice when it’s all installed on your computer.😉

You can get the e-sword program free as well. The only Catholic Bible I found there was the Douay-Rheims, but the link above has more to offer.

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

I have noticed that the Ancient Christian Commentary has been mentioned. It is a wonderful resource. I have most of them available on my site, free access. The only problem is, is that you cannot copy and paste from them since they are copyrighted, but I have also excerpts of them that will allow you to copy and paste. litteralchristianlibrary.wetpaint.com/page/Bible+Commentaries-Fathers+and+Doctors

By the way I have put together some commentaries from the Church Fathers by compiling their scattered quotes into a verse by verse commentary. Plus I have put together a few catenas, such as on Jonah and Revelation, they are like many commentaries all in one. All of them are on the page that I have provided above.
