So, in effect, since there is no direct teaching from the CCC and/or the Pope then interpretation of either theological interpretation is valid?
The teaching of the Catholic Faith is everything taught explicitly and implicitly by Tradition and Scripture and the Magisterium. So it is not true that, absent an explicit written statement from the Magisterium, we can believe whatever we want. For example, there were very few magisterial documents in the early Church, yet the faithful lived by Tradition and Scripture and Magisterium, even by what is implicit in those sources of truth.

The problem with West and others on this point is that they don’t really offer a theological argument. My articles on the topic argue from the writings of the Saints, and from Scripture, and from numerous different teachings and documents of the Magisterium. My conclusion is that it is not an open question; the teaching of the Church implies one theological position and not the other.

However, I’ve discussed this particular point of marital sexual ethics sufficiently in previous posts, and in my online articles.

Law, sex, and Christian society in medieval Europe by James A. Brundage (see here) is heavily footnoted with numerous sources in medieval Catholic canon law. From the overview:

This monumental study of medieval law and sexual conduct explores the origin and develpment of the Christian church’s sex law and the systems of belief upon which that law rested. Focusing on the Church’s own legal system of canon law, James A. Brundage offers a comprehensive history of legal doctrines-covering the millennium from A.D. 500 to 1500-concerning a wide variety of sexual behavior, including marital sex, adultery, homosexuality, concubinage, prostitution, masturbation, and incest. His survey makes strikingly clear how the system of sexual control in a world we have half-forgotten has shaped the world in which we live today. The regulation of marriage and divorce as we know it today, together with the outlawing of bigamy and polygamy and the imposition of criminal sanctions on such activities as sodomy, fellatio, cunnilingus, and bestiality, are all based in large measure upon ideas and beliefs about sexual morality that became law in Christian Europe in the Middle Ages.

It is of the utmost importanance that people seek the churches authentic teaching on sex in sacramental marriage. What is and is not allowed and not to listen to people who are on here posting their personal oppinions which is totally and completely untrue and contrary to what the Catholic Church teaches on sex in sacramental marriage and causing confusion and guilt for married couples.
How dare anyone say that a priest like Father Chad Ripperger is leading people astray in his teachings on sex in Sacramental Marriage. What he teaches is true and married couples who follow his teachings will have a fully satisfied sexual and happy marriage.
These people are going to die some day and they will have to answer for what they have done. You can not under any circumstances teach what is contrary to the Catholic church on Faith and Morals. You can not march to your own beat. The priests will tell you that. It is forbidden.
Like Father John Caropi says there are people choclate coating what they are saying to make you beleive what they are teaching is truth and it is lies. It is the Devil. Like Father John says he is not going to Hell because of what people think or do not agree with him. He teaches the truth as does Father Chad and all the other good priests who are trying to bring Souls to God. You need wisdom and understanding to know what is right and wrong and pray for it So seek the proper teachings of the Catholic Church

If you take the previous posted article and look at Q&A#11 it says that teachings… are heretical
This section that you refer to does not represent the teachings of the Church in this matter. A particular article can site all sorts of magisterial documents or saints…but this does not make the conclusions of that particular article to be correct…

And for the author to state that the well known Catholic writers and extremely faithful moral theologians --even with imprimaturs on their books-- as teaching what is ‘heretical’ is …well above his pay grade as they say. And of course wrong.

For a Catholic understanding of marital relations and the acts that can be part of chaste marital relation one may read Dr. Germain Grisez who is a well known Moral Theologian faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

See this section here.

He is rather …technical at times…and while very orthodox and good…not my favorite to just sit down and read 🙂 but one can see from his explaination…what is and is not part of marital sexual life. and what is thus NOT “unnatural” . But be sure to read all of it to understand what is not permitted as well…hint…(the husband may not climax outside of the act of intercourse per se).

Therefore, do not listen to the opinions, interpretations, and baseless claims of anonymous persons. Look for sound theological arguments based on Tradition, Scripture, Magisterium.

The problem with Fr. Chad’s talk on this subject (an audio file on his website) is that he offers no theological argument at all. He merely summarizes what some unnamed ‘moralists’ teach. He is not saying that these points are the teaching of the Church.

I do not know the work of this Priest…but I will say that …a Priest does NOT need to provide…‘theological arguments’ when teaching or preaching…about Catholic morality…

Such are for courses of theology …or scholarly works…

he may simply teach the Teachings of the Church …or even make use of the work of orthodox-Catholic moral theologians…who do not teach contrary to the Church.

Can anyone recommend some good online sources regarding Catholic sexual morality? I’m interested in explanations of the Church’s teaching, the authorities it’s based on, etc.

Thanks in advance.

It’s important to distinguish between what’s just rhetoric and what’s actually formal argument.

I do not listen to Ron Conte. Thank God I have the wisdom and understanding not to. I listen To Father John Caropi, Father Chad Ripperger and Father Jose’ L. Lavastida. Archbishop Fulton J Sheehan. All of these Priests teach the truth on Faith and Morals and will not confuse me or anyone else as to what is and is not permitted in the marriage Bed or cause people to have guilt feelings which is a terible thing to do to anyone.
Father Chad or any of the other priests could not teach what he does if it was contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. It would be giving Scandal and Bad example and we all know that is not the case.
None of these priests are going to Hell for not teaching the truth. That you can be sure of. That is what I like about Father John. He tells you straight. I am not going to Hell by worrying about what some one thinks about what I say. I tell you the truth wheather you like it or not. He will tell you he dont give a Rats Tail what anyone thinks.
