We are considering a move to South Bend, IN and are wondering what the parishes/schools are like there.

What are your experiences & recommendations?

There’s always the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, Indiana (not in South Bend, but close enough).

It’s a nice place to visit (in fact, it’s a “must visit at least once”), but I don’t recommend the Sunday Masses.

Sacred Heart Parish (which is distinct from Sacred Heart Basilica) is a very nice, small parish–it’s a personal parish, not a territorial one. I do recommend the daily Masses there–very reverent.

Thank you!

I was hoping to get information on parishes with schools (k-8) as we have two children currently in a wonderful Catholic school.

That’s going to depend on your exact address.

You’re only a member of whatever parish you live within, and since there are about 9 elementary schools just within South Bend itself, and 3 in Mishawaka (the neighboring city), that means your actual parish membership will likely be a factor.

Here’s a list of the schools

My husband and I are parishioners at St. Matthew Cathedral on the south side of South Bend. We love it there! We don’t have school-age children so we don’t know about the quality of the school, but the preaching we hear at Mass is solid. The Masses are done by the book, no “silly business” (which you have to watch out for with some parishes here). Lots of young families (because of the school).

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about South Bend. This is a very economically depressed area but by the same token, if you have employment here it can be quite an affordable place to live.

There is a parish in the neighboring city of Mishawaka. St. Bavo is a vibrant, loving, supportive and close community. The Spirit is definitely alive at St. Bavo. I do not have children that attend the school, but I do know families that do and they absolutely love the teachers and the curriculum. St. Bavo is a welcoming community of people…many are life long members and many generations of families belong to the parish. Worth looking into. We have members from all over, not just in Mishawaka. they come from South Bend, Elkhart, Bremen and other neighboring cities. I hope you come over and take a look for yourself.

I hope it’s ok to post on this old thread.

I am moving to this area soon and there are about ten parishes equidistant to our new home, so I was looking for help.

We will be on the south side of Mishawaka but most of the closest parishes are in South Bend.

Can anyone give any guidance to some of the more orthodox parishes which have young families?

Thanks.

We are at St. Matthew Cathedral on the southside of S Bend, very happy there, we were originally at St. Jude (also on the southside) and all of our kids went through there, also highly recommended. Most of the Catholic schools have a very strong record in S Bend / Mishawaka.
