South Dakotans rejected Tuesday a toughest-in-the-nation law that would have banned virtually all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. The outcome was a blow to conservatives, although they prevailed in four other states where voters approved constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage. Among them was Wisconsin, where gay-rights activists had nursed hopes of engineering the first defeat of such a ban.

Too bad. I was afraid the no rape or incest exception would doom it.

Ay, yi, yi. God sees all but waits.

From what I understand, it still allowed the rape victim to get the MAP. It would have allowed treatment for cancer, even if it resulted in a miscarriage.

Its because of the PP propoganda and lies that this did not win.

Pax vobiscum!

I literally feel sick to my stomach from today’s elections. In my state of Oregon, Measure 43 (Parental Notification) did not pass, even though polls showed that about 75% of the state supported it before the elections. But, the “No on 43” people put together an ad campaign that was (and no, I’m not just saying this) full of blatent lies. Also, other than one Republican, every single other seat in the state went to the Democrats, every single one of which is pro-abortion. I have almost gotten over my stage of absolute rage at this and am now more sad and sick than anything.

I also need to go to confession tomorrow because while some friends and I were at a resturant where a TV had some election news on it, some girl at a table next to us cheered when she saw that 43 did not pass and the thought crossed my mind to throw one of the 8 ft. tables at her.

In Christ,
Rand

I too live in Oregon and am greatly saddened that people believe it is good for children to kill babies.

Abortion is not about protecting the health of the mother, it is just another form of “contracerption”. Sick, sick, sick!

Like you, Rand, I too am also saddened at the loss of so many Republicans. While not perfect, at least they help keep the pro-death Democrats in check.

“Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: and let them that hate him flee from before his face. As smoke vanisheth, so let them vanish away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. And let the just feast, and rejoice before God: and be delighted with gladness. Sing ye to God, sing a psalm to his name, make a way for him who ascendeth upon the west: the Lord is his name. Rejoice ye before him: but the wicked shall be troubled at his presence…”

I am definitely plugging this in as an offertory motet on Sunday… Perhaps in anticipation of the bishops’ reconsecration of the US we could all consecrate ourselves anew to the Two Hearts. I’m so disgusted that Maria Cantwell–who openly calls herself a "Catholic-- was re-elected in Washington. My tax dollars will now be used to procure abortions for minors.

I, too, am sick. The voters of my state have approved the destruction of human embryos for so-called medical “progress.” I’m hard pressed to see where life triumphed anywhere last night. Total disaster.

And they cried with a loud voice, saying: How long, O Lord (holy and true) dost thou not judge and revenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? Apocalypse 6:10

Here in Wisconsin, our electorate re-elected a pro-abortion Democrat who claims to be Catholic. The bishops of Wisconsin asked him to rethink his stand on embryonic stem cell research and the Governor basically told them to mind their own business. IIt will be interesting to see how the bishops of our state will react to Governor Doyle now that he has been re-elected.

In addition, the Governor ran ads that were awful. They were just full of lies about his opponent who supports medical research that respects life.

People think that this embryonic stem cell research is the end all and be all for curing diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. In reality, no potential cure for these diseases using embryonic stem cells is close to providing a cure while adult stem cell treatments for many of these diseases are already in human clinical trials.

Furthermore, here in Wisconsin, our Governor who was just re-elected has a fund to give money to biotech companies who use stem cells derived from embryos. I am not aware of any money used from this fund to support research into Adult Stem Cells.

This is all about the money for the biotech companies and the reasons why Adult Stem Cells are not popular is because of that.

I will give you an example.

Suppose a company develops an embryonic stem cell line that can be used to cure diabetes. That company will, no doubt, get a patent for that line. Individuals treated using that line of cells will pay tons of money for the privilege of using those cells owned by the biotech company. Plus it is likely that the person who uses these cells will have to be on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their life. This also is not an inexpensive thing and will make the biotech and pharmaceutical companies tons of money.

Now, compare that to Adult Stem Cells which can be retrieved from the body of the patient, cultured, and then used in that same patient. Since those are the patient’s stem cells no one can patent them. Also since those are the patient’s stem cells anti-rejection drugs will not be needed. It is less expensive to treat people with these horrible diseases in this way AND these treatments hold the most promise. But this treatment will not make these guys near the money that treatments developed from Embryonic Stem Cells will. And this treatment obviously respects human life.

I never heard any of our pro-life candidate make the argument above and I really do not understand why they did not.

Let’s take a deep breath here and get a good nap. The South Dakota law was extreme and everybody knew it. It was designed as a means of bringing the abortion issue before the U.S. Supreme Court to get Roe v. Wade overturned. The plan was an effort to avoid the hard work of incremental attacks on abortion that have seen success and go right for the jugular. If it was misrepresented by opponents (and what isn’t?), their efforts were assisted by the smug, self-righteous tone of a sizeable number its supporters. I listened to some of those legislative interviews in the days immediately after the bill was passed, and was not very favorably impressed with their demonstrated lack of political acumen. This is not a loss for pro-lifers. It is a loss for politicians who acted immoderately.

This should be a wake up call to Bush supporters. I didn’t exactly see Bush encouraging people to vote yes for life did we? The supposedly pro-life Republican Party does nothing.

Thank you so much for the Psalm. I will be reading that over and over today. The news today is so sorrowful.

I can’t agree more. The Republican party gives a lot of lip service to pro-life voters. To be honest, the Republican party hopes that Roe v. Wade is never overturned. It is a good source of votes for the party.

Very well stated. You can only move a mountain one stone at a time.

A good lesson for all politicians, red or blue.

AMEN! I have been arguing this for years, but when I have, people have just looked at me like they pit me because I have lost it.

You have a valid point. The drug manufacturers stand to profit mightily. But, (1) Americans have already accepted drug manufacturers making scads of money with patented drugs and medications; (2) it sounds heartless to suggest to sufferers of horrible diseases that every effort will not be made to find a cure for their ailments; and (3) a large percentage of the public seems to accept the theory that there are things that can be accomplished with embryonic stem cells that cannot be accomplished with adult stem cells.

I was proud of my home state, not I am bewildered and sad. This was their chance to set an example for the rest of the nation and they tossed it out!

Love and peace,

The democrats are the party of death, and the Republicans are pro-life with exceptions. Let’s pray that God’s will be done and not put our salvation in political parties and such. Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut.👍

I think it would be more accurate to say that the Democrats are the party of abortion (they tend to oppose the death penalty) and the Republicans claim to be pro-life.

I don’t think Jesus would join either party.

Agreed.

Interestingly, there were some pro-life democrats ( I know that sounds like a contradiction) elected to congress this year. Wonder what Hillary and Nancy Pelosi will do with that.

Interesting idea, that the Republicans may not really want to end abortion any more than some say the Democrats really want to end poverty. Each party benefits when the country is dissatisfied with the other.

After all, if politicians actually fixed problems for good, they’d be out of a job.
