I don’t know much about Southern Baptist Church. Do you know what the members of this church think about Catholic? (things such as: anti-Christ, etc …)

I don’t mean to be prejudice or offend anyone here, but my girlfriend is looking for a roommate and it would be hard if she has someone living as roommate going after her trying to convert or telling her about things that aren’t true about Catholic faith.

Thanks!

There is a huge range of Southern Baptists, so it’s difficult to say.

They range from extremely conservative (no slacks, no tracks, no blacks) to extremely liberal (one of the SB churches in our former city allowed a witch coven to meet in their building on Sunday afternoons).

Part of the Baptist heritage is maintaining the freedom for each believer to believe their own interpretations of the Gospel. That’s why there are so many Baptist denominations–they split off when they disagree, rather than trying to reconcile the disagreement.

My husband and I attended a fairly liberal SB church for two years in North Carolina. We got out of there because they were a little too open-minded!

Sorry I can’t be of more help. I guess the gist of what I’m saying is, “You’ll have to ask the roommate straight out.”

You have to understand that Southern Baptist are not a denomination in the traditional sence of the word like Methodist or Presbyterians. They are a cooperative grouping of independent baptist churches that work together for missions etc… So you have a wide range of beliefs. But there are “core” beliefs that the church member of the convention holds to be true such as the authority of scriptures. So some will say Catholics are anti christ and other who would laugh at such an assertion. Note that they all evangelize.

Did you google “Southern Baptist Convention”? They’re a big and fairly responsible Baptist group (the largest, I believe).

This is complicated…I think the best way is to keep praying for a Catholic roommate. 🙂 We did pray for this, and currently my girlfriend is sharing the house with 2 Catholic roommates but one is moving out soon due to the fact that her remaining family members will be moving to town and they are getting an apartment. One of the roommates just starts to attend Sunday mass again after moving into the house; this is a good thing and we hope that she will be able to learn more about the Catholic faith. Having someone in the house who is eager to evangelize about non-Catholic faith can be a bit difficult.

To be a Southern Baptist “Church” you have to belong to the Southern Baptist Convention. The Southern Baptist seminaries go anywhere from liberal to conservative, although the conservatives are now back in power.

This is a pamphlet from the North American Mission Board of the SBC: Roman Catholicism

It’s a PDF file and that’s why I didn’t directly link to that. But, the Roman Catholicism file is the first one listed.

You can find the official SBC site here: Southern Baptist Convention

The Convention is made up of Baptist churches that agree to adhere to their philosophy and participate in the Cooperative missions of the Convention.

It is not like the Catholic Church (obviously) 😉

The pamphlet characterizes Catholics as “lost”. :tsktsk:
I didn’t say I agreed with it. The OP wanted to know what SBC’s believe. I merely showed them the link for his/her research. I wholly disbelieve it, in fact. I was SBC most of my life - approximately 30 years. I never believed it even when I was one.

Your average Southern Baptist has no idea what a Catholic believes. For 30 years I didn’t know anything about Catholics. My hometown was overrun by SBC churches with only 1 Catholic Church in town. Not many people attend there. I hope that the person is willing to be open to Catholicism. My friend, you just never know.

I wasn’t tskstk-ing you, but rather the SBC for printing that.

Okay :o I just didn’t want my fellow brother and sister Catholics thinking I believe that. 😉

Well I’m not surprized at the claims of Catholics and Orhtodox not being saved. That is just greatly disordered…another way to say this is demented or twisted. There is a serious lack of correct psychological thinking that takes place in this type of thinking. In my opininion it is Satan at work twisting the minds of our weaker brothers and sisters into believing lies to place us against each other. That is just sad.

I somewhat agree, especially with the last part. But, you realize that it cuts both ways. It’s JW’s against everybody, Mormons against Catholics, Baptists against Mormons and on and on. Everybody thinks they are right and others are wrong.

PROTESTANTS VIEW SOUTHERN BAPTISTS
Code:
My experience among northern mainline Protestants is that many are rather unsympathetic toward Southern Baptists. Some of that is an historic suspicion arising out of the years when most SBs were supporters of segregation. That has changed, but SBs still tend to oppose ordination of women, while churches like the United Methodists have ordained roughly 10,000 women already. There is also a feeling that SBs generally - not all, by any means - re very conservative theologically, which is seen as a lack of intelligent religion to many other mainline Protestants.

The SBs also stand apart from most mainline Protestants. It is the only large Protestant group, for example, that has joined neither the National Council of Churches or the World Council of Churches.

But, re the roommate problem, SBs are like Catholics in that some are quite forward, eager to spread a traditional form of their faith, while others are open to calm, affirmative conversation, ready to appreciate and/or respect other faiths.

What do you know about the Church of Christ?

Sorry Water,
I was getting off on my own tangent and just blew you off…didn’t mean too. My stepmother wis SB and very proud of it. They are very nice people. I never bought into their theology simply because you’d have to ignore most of the bible and highlight the other. No offense, but I created my own terminology for them…black liners and high lighters…like black marker pens to simply blot out what they don’t want to hear and highlighers to over emphasis other scirpture without the entire bible or withint historical and written cotext. SOooo if you’ver ever seen me post that…as much as I lover them I do thing their views are grossly distorted over all. My mother was a non-denominational Christian that could never find a church she felt like she was part of or could fit in. My wife is from the Church of Christ and I practiced it devoutly for over 17 years fortunately for me I discovered the answers to most of my unanswered questions in discovering the early church fathers.

We allowed a Baptist to live with us one semester while he finished is thesis. He was very nice and respectful. He also taught us some of their beleifs that are misunderstood…like once saved always saved. Even though I still do not agree with it, it was rather interesting to hear about. But of course as a good Church of Christ…Christian only…the church that Christ began …he was doomed to hell anyway.,…what a loss. Oh well can’t win them all…[tongue in cheek]. I never really bought that, but my wife really did…her daddy was an elder. Better to have a Baptist whether SB or not than a COC. Ironically though the COC is much closer to Catholic beliefs than they care to admit than other bible only Christians. I’d certainly suggest interviewing them and preferable a family member to make sure they’re not over the top…Ask them which church they attend at home…and check it out.

No problem at all, vocatio. I didn’t notice anything and I am thankful for your advices and others’. My girlfriend did have a roommate who wasn’t a Christian but this roommate is very nice and considerate although sometimes this roommate shows some disagreement about the Pope, etc …but it was alright. I pray that by God’s will, we know the person whom God will send to us as my girlfriend’s roommate, and that we have faith in Him. We still need to be little prudent in doing this.

A bit off topic but as a matter of fact, my brother and sister are not Catholic and we all love to talk about our faith in Christ - we don’t try to convert one another right in the face (but I am sure we pray for one another to convert to the other’s faith) 😃 – I am proud of my brother - You can see his site and mission here: missioncambodia.com - he is a physician but sold and quit his business here in the US to go to Cambodia to help the poor and talk to them about Jesus.

Yeah, my girlfriend always let me come and talk whenever we have someone coming over to look at the house. The last interview we had was a nice lady. She is Christian (a Baptist) – the only problem is that she brought with her “her partner”. So, we simply say about our faith that we don’t believe in gay marriage and gay relationship, and we practice Catholic at my girlfriend’s house.

Now, we have another one who is a member of Southern Baptist asking to see the room and I thought I should ask some questions here first so that we don’t offend the person by any mean.

Thanks!

You know, having a Catholic roommate wouldn’t be such a good deal if:
  1. The Catholic was lukewarm towards her faith, never attends Mass, and has no idea of what her Church teaches.
  2. The Catholic is liberal theologically and believes that Jesus didn’t really rise from the dead, that Mary wasn’t really a virgin, etc.
  3. The Catholic is liberal in practices, and believes that women should be priests, that priests should be married, and that homosexuals should be allowed to marry.
  4. The Catholic is a hypocrite and deliberately chooses to sin regularly and does not avail herself of Reconciliation or the Eucharist.
My daughter (not a Catholic) attended a Catholic university and for the first three years, had Catholic roommates who were total hypocrites. This really turned her off to Catholicism. Finally in her Senior year, she had two serious Catholic roommates, and it was the best year she had.

I honestly think, rather than Catholics 1-4 above, I would prefer a Protestant roommate who was serious about her faith, as long as she was also willing to have an open mind and be charitable. The Catechism says that as much as it is possible, we are supposed to maintain dialogue with our non-Catholic brothers and sisters.

I’ve actually written a novel about a Catholic man (a federal officer) who is sent on a case to Africa and ends up with an anti-Catholic Protestant roommate (a female). By the end of my novel, she isn’t a Catholic, but his loving sacrifices for her and his courage, along with his knowledge of the Bible, have convinced her that Catholics are Christians and that she must change her intolerant ways.

Water, I have been in the Baptist culture for many years and have held most positions of leadership in my church. I can say that the advice you have received on this thread comes from knowledgable people and is totally correct.

I was a Sunday School teacher in the SBC for many years prior to my converting to Roman Catholic Easter 2006.

I would say theologically SB and RC are about as far as part as you can be and both be called Christian.

As far as having a roomate of different “faith”, if both are well grounded in their faith then it lead to many interesting discussions and as long as both were respectful then it might not be bad. However, I would think it might be better to have a lukewarm Catholic so a strong Catholic might lead them back to the true church.
