Welcome home, Megan.

One idea might be to have a good book ready for them to read…one that explains Catholicism in clear terms. When they start to pepper you…and they will…relentlessly…you can simply say, “Here…read this.”

One suggestion might be Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating. Another would be Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn.
As a Convert from the Orthodox Jewish Faith, my prayers are with you, as I am the only Catholic in my family, with an ultra orthodox Rabbi also in the family, ringlets to boot.
Like St Paul and all the Apostles, its “Here I am Lord, to do your Will” it will be hard, it will be tough, you might even shed tears, but the Grace the Lord will give you and the love the Lord will send to his faithfull servant (meaning you) will be a hundred fold, I know I had to face my parents and got thrown out of the house, but not eaten by the lions, the Lord is not outdone in generousity - I also would recomment leaving the book lying around the dining room/sitting room Catholicism & Fundamentalism by Karl Keating, it will arouse curiousity, after all we have been around for 2 thousand years and Fundamentalism for ?
Will keep you in my prayers, its going to be a tough road, May the Lord of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob go with you, my brother in Christ the Lord.:signofcross::signofcross:

i am so happy for you too! it must have been so rough. i’m interested in knowing what jewish beliefs about Jesus are. i’ve only heard that they believe he was a good man, but not the son of God. is this true? if so, it must have been hard to overcome the beliefs you were raised with! i’m so happy for you and proud of your strength! God bless you!

Most of the Jewish people I know think that Jesus was an ordinary man with illusions of grandeur, said he was the Messiah and they think he was nothing at all, an ordinary person gone wrong so to speak and they are still waiting for the Messiah, which is very sad, and what a shock when they die to know they are waiting on someone who has been already and in whom they dont believe and talk bad about, the Moslems and Jews are in the same boat, the Moslems think that the Jews let off the real Jesus and got a look alike and crucified him instead, if that is not insanity I dont know what is especially when the Moslem religion was not invented for many, many centuries later how can they say this in this Quaran must be full of rubbish if this is anything to go by. It was very hard, but the Lord gives one the strength, as STEWSTEW SAYS the Lord puts a fire in your belly to know and love him more, who knows down the road you might enter Religious Life. Always remember to stay close to the teachings of the Holy Father and the Church and you will never go wrong. May the Lord always keep you close. :signofcross:

wow! It’s amazing that you overcame that! What did your family think? That must have very difficult for all of you! Is it true they don’t believe in hell, either?

Congratulations, Megan. As another poster mentioned, my Baptist parents were surprisingly accepting nearly two years ago when I broke it to them, even with my dad being an ex-Catholic. I also had bad experiences with Baptist Churches, and I’m sure this contributed to my parents’ understanding of my leaving their faith. I’m sure your parents will feel the same way if they respect you to make your own decisions.

Ok, I was raised southern Baptist and to put it nicely, it just wasn’t for me. Anyway, I’m sure most of you know what Baptists think about Catholics. Thing is, for a couple of years now I’ve been going to a Catholic church and have decided that it’s exactly what God has called me to do. I love it. It lights a fire in my soul. I start my RCIA classes next month and I want my parents to be at my Confirmation. Well, I want to know how to “break it” to my parents. They’re going to try to talk me out of it, but will eventually accept it as my decision. (I’m 24 btw) But I want them to know that this has made me grow spiritually and has helped me to be a way better person. I want them to know that this does not mean I’m going to hell and that I haven’t turned to “Christian Paganism.” They’ve never said it, but I had a very vehement preacher that hardly went through a sermon without talking about how evil catholics were. I just know this is where I am supposed to be. Prayers for strength are very welcome to me.
Megan,

God bless you. When you speak to your parents about your conversion make sure that they know how much you love the Lord. Your enthusiasm and love of God will help them see your conversion for what it is. Do not be negative in any way no matter what they say. Be the best daughter to them that you can be, and let them know that it is the Holy Spirit that is leading you. Let them see that the good fruit that is being produced in you is by God’s grace.

You may not win them over immediately, but they will eventually see that your conversion is from God because of the personal holiness that you receive through the Church and the sacraments. Be prepared to give good solid answers to their questions and remarks. If necessary, take time to research the answers and get back to them. Whatever you do, avoid attacking them or their beliefs. How you live as a Catholic will speak to them more than your words, but you will need to give solid answers to questions.

I will pray for you.

God bless.

I am also.a convert to Catholicism, I would just sit down and have a nice, genuine discussion with them, as for your Baptist Pastor, tell him “judge not lest ye be judged.” He is NOT God, and it is NOT up to him to determine who is and is not evil…👍

Stand strong-you’ll get through it. God will give you the strength. And you may be pleasantly surprised-your parents could well end up more impressed with your action than you think.

thank you everyone for your support and prayers! i’ve been praying about it and today when i spoke to my dad, it just sort of came up. he was very happy! he said he has no problem with catholics, and said his only concern was the worship of saints and mary. i told him it was like asking your grandparents for prayer and support and guidance. he said he didnt had always thought catholics worshipped them like Jesus, but when he found that was not the case he gave me his blessing and told me he was proud of me. he told me that i finally found a place where my gifts would be accepted instead of looked down upon and maybe this is why my uncle always saw a star above my head when he saw me. he said God put me where i needed to be and that i can finally grow and share my heart with all the world. i cried. it was a wonderful moment. 🙂 thanks again everyone!

Hi, Megan,

Congratulations! We are all very happy for you! 👍

Continue to set the kind of example your Baptist friends will see as a true reflection of Christ … and your Catholic friends will benefit from this, too! 😃

Kindly keep all of us in your prayers.

God bless

I certainly will keep you all in my prayers. Praying is one of my specialties!!! I pray and it happens, or it’s made apparent that the answer is no! ha! Please, anyone who would like specific prayer requests is more than welcome to inbox me with it! Know that I will not judge or make fun of anyone and anything you ask me to pray for will not be shared with anyone! If I think I may need to bring more people in on it, I will talk to my Grandmother and Mother who are also very gifted with prayer, I will only tell them the circumstances. God bless you all! I am so ready for my RCIA classes! I can’t wait!!!
