Why would any parent agree to adopt a child that they could not raise in their faith? And why would a government, of what I presumed was a democratic country, sign such an agreement that obviously obliterates the rights of the adoptive parents? If Morocco wants to raise these children as Muslims, then maybe they should find Muslims to raise them instead of shipping them off to be raised by, what I’d assume to be mostly, Catholic parents, being that Spain is a predominantly Catholic nation? Some of the things people do boggle the mind. Is it political correctness or something?

Lol! If they want them to be Muslims, they should send them to Muslims, not Catholic or atheists (Spain is majority atheist).

LOL! I love how the only way that exists for non-Christians to prevent the spread of Christianity is to use tyrannical force.

This is an unjust interference of the right of parents to raise their children according to their convictions.

Incidentally, this sort of thing is the reason many Muslim countries are reluctant to legalize the practice of adoption.

Seriously, what is wrong with Spanish officials? The problem with Franco was not that he was Catholic, but that he was authoritarian.

The decision is only authoritarian, and lacks any sense of a backbone whatsoever.

If they are going to be watched by foreign authorities, why would they adopt at all? More importantly, why is the Spanish government caving on this one?

No government “owes” foreign applicants the right to adoption, whatsoever. 🤷

Most countries have established international adoption policies and procedures. Russia, for example, gives preference to applicants of Russian heritage. China permits only married couples to adopt, and they must fall within a certain age range. Others, such as Romania, are generally closed to international adoption.

Obviously, if Spanish applicants want to adopt Moroccan children, they must comply with the conditions set by the Moroccan government. 🤷 Likewise, Spain must uphold those conditions to facilitate the exchange for its citizens. And if some don’t like or meet the requirements, they can seek adoption elsewhere.

Frankly, most most of the reactions here appear to be out of anti-Muslim sentiment. And I’m not sure why CWN finds this news mentionable, either.

Actually, that basically is what Moroccan law has been The decision by Spain is intended to allow non-Muslim parents to “adopt” Moroccan children by guaranteeing their faith until age 18.
As explained in a Morocco News Board report last year, in Islamic law raising a child that is not one’s genetic offspring is encouraged, but the young person does not become the true child of the adoptive parents. Instead, in an arrangement known as kafala the child is monitored to assure that he or she is raised as a Muslim. Because monitoring of children abroad is difficult, last year Morocco’s Ministry of Justice and Freedoms issued Circular No. 40 S/2 providing that kafala would be allowed only for parents who reside permanently in Morocco. Spain’s new arrangement allows Spanish parents to avoid the restrictions in Circular 40 S/2.

Adoption, as we understand it in the West, isn’t followed in Morocco.

Muslims are forbidden to adopt anyway, so in effect this makes the process futile.

I know very little about these issues, so perhaps you can clarify. Tthe article I quoted seems to indicate that adoption (as practiced in the West) is not recognized by Islamic law. A child can not acquire new parents. This doesn’t mean that adult women or couples are not allowed to raise orphans… just that the orphans do not become their children.
