Spanish (Latino/ Hispanic) Catholic Piety

Hi everyone,

I am a fan of learning about different devotions and the piety of different cultures. I know a lot about and have read much literature on English Catholic spirituality. I was looking for more on Spanish piety and devotional practices. There is not a lot of information on this that I can find and was wondering if anybody knew of good websites or books to recommend.

I’m Mexican and have had restricted exposure to my culture’s Catholic devotions. I don’t know of any sites or resources that can help, but I’ll share what I’ve experienced.

Mexicans will kiss a cross that they form with their thumb and index finger after making the Sign of the Cross. When entering the Confessional, and sometimes outside of Confession, they say “Ave María purísima, sin pecado concebido (Hail purest Mary, conceived without sin)”. In Confession, the priest says the first part up to purísima, the penitent says the rest. They also say “¡Viva Cristo Rey! ¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! (Long live Christ the King, long live the Virgin of Guadalupe)” They have a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin, especially to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
