We will be leaving for vacation Sunday morning early. At our destination the only evening Mass is a Spanish Mass. Do we still have to go?

Your obligation to attend Mass is not contingent upon what language it is offered. If you don’t feel you can participate and don’t wish to receive Eucharist, that is your prerogative.

But it’s fun to go to Mass in a different country. I went in Germany and France. I didn’t understand a word, but I knew what was going on.

Hopefully you can go to an “old world” church - Europe has some magnificent churches!

Yes, but this is not another country. Just another state. It just happens that the Sunday evening Mass is in Spanish. So, do we still have to go?

Yes, you still have an obligation to go even if you don’t understand Spanish.

You can attend the Saturday anticipated Mass before you leave for vacation (unless you mean tomorrow).

You can also look up Catholic Churches on your route and go to one on your way.

Yes, you still hold the obligation.

I recently attended a spanish mass with my wife in Myrtle Beach because we wanted to attend, but we missed out on the earlier masses because we slept in late. So we went to the noon mass and didn’t know it was a spanish mass until we got there and everyone there (except the priest) were all hispanic. I felt really out of place, but I felt convicted and knew in my heart that I had an obligation that had to be fulfilled, so I stayed. It was an interesting experience and it was nice to get to witness a different mass style. They had the order of mass in parallel (english and spanish) in the missals in the pews, so I just used that to follow along. The priest gave a really long homily (that I didn’t really understand), the mass lasted 1 1/2 hours.

You still have your obligation, and it is still the same Christ present in the Eucharist. Go for Him, not for yourself.

Rejoice that you can attend Mass.

Mass is universal - the language does not matter.

You can print the readings for Mass before you go. However, if they offer English Masses at another time, most likely the books in the pew will have both English and Spanish readings.
