Usted is a modern spanish contraction of Vuestra Merced (His Mercy), is not a pronoun, is more like a formal title, like Mr or Sir. The second person singular vos was the formal, tu was the normal. The difference has disappeared since the Middle Ages. No one has made the difference and in Spanish we pray to God as Tu (you). Read a Spanish Bible for example or St. John of the Cross and you will get the idea. There is no thou/you contrast in modern Spanish. And in Argentina and Central america they use the Vos form, but it replaces the Tu anyways.
