Madrid, Jun. 23 (CNA/CWNews.com) - After heated debate, the Spanish Senate has vetoed a bill that would make homosexual unions equivalent to marriage. Now voters are demanding the bill be completely killed in the Senate rather than being sent to the House of Representatives and that a referendum on the issue be held.

The move to veto passed by a vote of 131 to 119. The measure could go back to the House of Representatives, where the Socialist government has enough support for it pass in a vote scheduled for June 30. . . .

Sounds like a limited win for the CC. Can someone explain the Spanish legislative process?

So there’s hope for Spain after all! 🙂
I pray that they don’t follow Canada’s lead… :banghead:

Spain’s voters have punished the parties that voted against gay marriage in the Senate.

Or, further punished them, I should say. In 2007, the “Popular” Party lost 2 seats in the upper house, bringing them from 126 to 124. They lost at least one more now, bringing then down to 123 (but the final results aren’t in, so they might have lost a couple more). Meanwhile, the ruling party gained 8 more seats (so far), adding to the gains they made last year from 97 to 99, and as it stands now, they have 107!

What’s really funny is this description of how the PP see it from their end:
Many conservatives consider Zapatero’s 2004 victory a fluke, and saw Sunday’s vote as their chance to correct it.
Guess the voters decided the “many conservatives” were the ones that needed “correcting”. Great job, Spanish voters. Stand on the side of equality!
