I’m just curious how does one start speaking in tongue?
and how does it feel when you speak in tongue?

Usually you don’t just start to speak in tongue.
Usually you receive the tongue after someone (who is Holy Spirit anointed, and who speaks in tongue himself) laid hands on you and prayed over you, on the condition that you have a strong desire to receive it. If you are not sure you want it, God will not force it on you.

Some tongue could be simple sound, some could be another unknown language, for example, French or Chinese, etc. That is my understanding.

Usually the one speaks in tongue does not understand the tongue. Someone may have the gift of interpreting the tongue. That is a different gift.

I mean, is there any word(s) that one has to say repeatedly? or it happens spontaneously?

I just find it quite illogical for one to be able to speak spontaneously.

Tongue is a given gift. One does not decide what words to express or what sound to make. It is led by the Holy Spirit.
I think once the tongue is given, you will say the same language. Maybe the Holy Spirit will give new words or sound when one is practicing the old one, that I don’t know.

Ummm… Well, speaking in tongues, particularly in non-human tongues is something of a tricky subject in the Church. In Charasmatic groups where it appears common, one has to wonder how much of it is authentic and how much of it is self delusion or even a deliberate attempt to fool others into believing one has receivied the gift.

In any case, there is nothing we can really do to receive the gift. Like all gifts of God, it is granted for the benefit of the individual and for the Church. If the gift would bring benefit to neither, then the Holy Spirit will not grant it to the individual.

From what I know and have be taught, speaking in tongues is a gift and can only happen when your audience does not understand your native language and/or there is a translator present.

There is biblical back up for what I just said but I don’t know where. If I can find it I will post the verses.

Speaking in tongues is also speaking a diferent language(not just some random babbling) as I know some churches do do for some weird reason.

Pretty much, speaking in tongues only occurs when there’s a practical reason for God to bestow the gift upon you. It never just “happens” and it definitely doesn’t happen to everyone.

Also keep in mind that speaking in tongues as practiced by some Charasmatics where what is spoken appears to be babble is also practiced by non-Christian religions (and was practiced before Christ) and so is something to be somewhat suspicious of.

Really? What proof if any does one have to cite on your comment “not just some random babbling” ?
I want to hear this stuff taped and deciphered by an expert that can prove this is not random babbling before I accept that comment.

I am not saying that I am ruling it out as impossible. I am saying that I don’t think anyone can make the claim you just did. So far I have not seen it.
I am willing to read any citations you can provide for proof that it is not random babbling.

Just as a curiosity, while I know or have heard of several individuals or groups who claim to speak in tongues, I don’t believe that I have heard of any individual or group, in modern times, who claim to be able to INTERPRET the tongues. Now, according to the Bible and St. Paul, if there were those who spoke in tongues, there would also be those to interpret.

So, where are the interpreters?

Well, it might not really interpreter, but some people are able to know whether a person is speaking in tongue or not.

Once, a friend of mine (non-charismatic person) feel peaceful when the person next to her speaking in tongue. At another occassion, she was totally distracted & scared by the person next to her who speaking in tongue. Her friend explained to her that the first person really spoke in tongue while the later just faking it, that’s why she was distracted & scared.

Sounds like an accurate gauge for making a distinction…

Not so sure that is a good way to make the distinction. There are definitely practices that can make one feel at peace that are not from God. Otherwise Transendental Meditation would be a Christian Practice.

Purely anecdotal but real evidence of tongues:

I was once at a prayer group in a person’s home. After singing several songs of praise and worship, we were all standing quietly and reverently, in silent prayer, before beginning the evening’s talk and conversation. A woman near me, a white woman well into her 60s who had never left the country, suddenly began to shout out in a loud voice a repeated phrase which I could not understand because it sounded like a foreign language. Three times she shouted.

A pregnant moment of silence followed, with none of us moving or speaking, just remaining in silent prayer, after which there was a timid knock on the front door. The host opened the door to find a woman who appeared Indian standing there, in tears. She was clearly in distress.

Our host invited her in and we broke apart to attend to her. In broken English she helped us to understand that her car had died several blocks away, and she had no money, and no food at home, and no way to get home to her children who were with a sitter. She was afraid the sitter would leave if she did not get home soon. She had begun to walk home, praying to God to help her. When she passed the home we were in, she heard a loud voice inside the home call out in her native tongue, which was a dialect of Indian, “Knock on this door to find help!”

Three times the voice cried out, so with great fear, she obeyed. And she received the help she so desperately needed right then.

Of course we drove her home, and brought her groceries, and one of the men was able to fix her car, and all of us marvelled at how our God answers prayers.

Like an earlier poster said, tongues is a gift to the whole body, given only when needed, and only when it builds up the Body of Christ.

Makerteacher,

That is a wonderful experience you just shared.

However, I am interested in the Healing Masses that Charismatics have in the Catholic Church.

What happened to you, well- that really is not the main avenue of the Charasmatic Catholic experience (that is to say in homes during a bible/prayer meeting)

The Charismatic Catholic in the Church facillity is what I am interested in.

With a Priest presiding and all the works.

I speak from witnessing several, and this is why I am interested in that expression. I think it is worlds apart from your personal experience.

Hi all
Interesting topic.
Just a comment to ponder. I cannot quote but was somewhere where I heard JP2 speaking in prayer and it was said he spoke in tongues. I was interested to find that out.
As far as I know anything that distracts from the celebration of the mass is not cool. Therefore unless it was specifically a mass where the priest leading it or congregation frequently used this form of worship it would not be promoted. Everyone in the Body of Christ should be focused on the celebration on the alter and follow the priest’s words.
I have been to both kinds of masses. Since it is a gift of God you can be sure that God knows when and where to give others that ability.
Yes, I have experienced this gift and yes I have heard interpretation.
God Bless all,
Cheryl:)

The gift of tongues is the ability to speak in a foreign language that you did not know before. For example in a group you might speak French (you never knew French before) and the interpreter is someone in the group that also speaks French.
There is nothing in Pauls’ Letter to the Corinthians that suggests the gift of tongues is anything other than a real but foreign language.
People who spout out gibberish tongues are simply faking it. It is not true.

Now it does sound like the person is possessed 😛

Acts 2:1-12

That was truly an amazing experience where the prayer group had a woman in need knock on their door! But to the original poster, I would like to say that it is normally not as dramatic as that. At Charismatic Masses and Charismatic Conferences, a lot of people do what they call “praying in tongues.” It usually sounds like a soft babbling, which the whole crowd will do together sometimes.

I think that anyone who wants to experience this should show up at a Charismatic Conference or a Charismatic Mass. Usually they have “prayer teams” at these events. You could just line up to be prayed for and tell them that you wish you had this gift and see what happens.

I can assure you the God is a “gentleman” who will never have you do anything against your will. If you feel uncomfortable with it, you don’t have to have this gift.

Well, I just did Life in the Spirit Seminar, and had baptism in the spirit… yet, I felt nothing until now. The speaker that day said “you might not get it straight away tonight, but keep praying and practising…” which I don’t know how to…
