Greetings all.

For those who are unfamiliar with me, I’m a Muslim living in the UK.

From what I’ve seen the moderation in this section of the forums seems very light, so I think it should serve as testafrment to just how bad things were getting in that thread that a moderator had to step in and close it.

I live in an area where there’s a relatively high Catholic population. My elder brother and sister were both educated in a local Catholic school, as do my sister’s children now. I’ve gotten to know several Catholics quite well in the short time I’ve lived on this Earth, and I’ve found them all to be friendly, charitable people who have been a pleasure to been around; I’ve always had a good opinion of Catholics, and the experience of my occasional postings on this site are not going to change that.

But had I not already knew many Catholics and had a good opinion of them before I started posting here, I honestly don’t think I would have left with a good opinion of you guys, sorry. There is a strain of very vocal posters on this site (particularly in this section of the forums) who frankly give a downright scary impression of Catholicism. I don’t think these people are representative of Catholicism nor are they inline your Church’s teaching, and I think it would be a real shame if a Muslim (or any other non-Catholic) came across them and thought ‘so that’s what Catholics are like’, but I really don’t see how that’s not going to happen with how things are around here. The way some of the Catholics post here leaves you feeling genuinely hated and despised, or at best thought of as a naive fool.

If you guys want people of other religions who visit this site to leave with a higher opinion of Catholics and the Catholic Church than when they arrived, then there are going to have to be some big chances round here. Just some sincere advice from an outsider.

Peace, and may God forgive us our sins.

Now back on topic… I see nowhere that says that the Church forbids speaking against Islam… The pope basically said to speak of Christ and to speak as Christ would… with love and knowledge… not fear and ignorance.
Blest One, it’s possible that you’re not familiar with the document called “Nostra Aetate-Vatican II on Non-Christian Religions, Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions,” published by Pope Paul VI, Rome, at St. Peter’s, 28 October, 1965. It says, in part:

"3. **The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself, merciful and all-powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth (5), who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even His inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes great pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. **Though they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet. They also honor Mary, His virgin mother; at times they even call on her with devotion. In addition, they await the day of judgement when God will render their deserts to all those who have been raised up from the dead. Finally, they value the moral life and worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving and fasting.

Since in the course of centuries not a few quarrels and hostilities have arisen between Christians and Moslems, this Sacred Synod urges all to forget the past and to work sincerely for mutual understanding and to preserve as well as to promote together for the benefit of all mankind social justice and moral welfare, as well as peace and freedom."

I’ll guess you weren’t even born yet, but this is the teaching we are to follow as faithful Catholics. Furthermore, although terribly sad - some Catholics choose to ignore this and to promote strife.

I am right there with you on the peaceful/jihad thing… and the suicide bomber thing too… and even the justification thing… but I don’t believe with certainty that striking up a conversation about Christ will necessarily get you beheaded… unless of course it is God’s will that you join him in paradise at that moment. Sometimes the loudest supporters are the most unsure of themselves… I even venture to guess that they are trying to convince themselves many times.
Now this part is just hilarious!!! I think I will send it to my son to add to his Chuck Norris joke repertoire or better yet… have a tee shirt made that says: Chuck Norris is not my religious authority!

Anyway… I think you all might benefit from remembering to separate the actions of the followers from the religious beliefs. Remember that faith in God does not make us perfect… it just makes all things possible.

Now back on topic… I see nowhere that says that the Church forbids speaking against Islam… The pope basically said to speak of Christ and to speak as Christ would… with love and knowledge… not fear and ignorance.
And you’re right. There are peace loving muslims in the world and some (very few) are against (not openly) the violence and terror of militant muslims hiding behind the facade of Islam.

To the person of good understanding (not a religious authority), few words will suffice.

I believe the Holy Father is alluding to - catholics doing the basic catholic things - really well. So that we are not swept away in a naive wave of pseudo-ecumenism or false sense of “your ok and I’m ok”, love and harmony…give the world a Coke etc.

Or: Be charitable but don’t be naive.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

I know what you mean and I apologize for much of what’s been posted. It’s a very good thing that you are friends with some Catholics and even more reassuring that you know that those who spread hatred regarding Islam are, in fact, acting in direct opposition to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Thanks for joining in with your thoughts/experiences on this thread.

It’s not a mystery. You can’t slice up your “tolerance” to exclude Moslems. Again, here is “what the Holy Father means,” what the Vatican has been teaching since 1965:

**

Since in the course of centuries not a few quarrels and hostilities have arisen between Christians and Moslems, this Sacred Synod urges all to forget the past and to work sincerely for mutual understanding and to preserve as well as to promote together for the benefit of all mankind social justice and moral welfare, as well as peace and freedom."**

About a week ago, from Benedict XVI:

**

"Consequently, the most important contribution we can bring to interreligious dialogue is our knowledge of Jesus of Nazareth, “the way, the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). Dialogue, based on mutual respect and truth, cannot fail to have a positive influence on the social climate of your country. The delicacy of this task requires thorough preparation of clergy and lay people, first of all by offering them a deeper knowledge of their own faith and then by helping them to grow in their understanding of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and the other religions present in your region.” **

Slice it, dice it, fold and mutilate it, you can’t make it mean what YOU want.

I won’t contribute to the litigious nature of this thread. I will extract myself from it.

I have read a lot of what is happening in the UK now. What do you have to say about the escalating violence against non-muslims there? Even in europe - they are once again rioting in France - the muslim on non-muslim violence is skyrocketing.

What is up over there?

Along with anyone who speaks up being either sued, having fatwas issued against them, and free speech being stymied - only if it is against islam - not againt Judaism or Christianity. Way too many people are now forced to have 24 hour guards and such.

Again, what is up?

Yes, I have read this and the jist of what it says is that we should look at the good in all religions and still acknowledge what we see as error… for instance… Moslems do have a much better devotion to prayer than the average Christian… and even the average Catholic. That is to be commended, but however, we also acknowledge that they don’t believe that Jesus was the Messiah and is One with God. It does not say we have to agree with them, it merely points out the obvious… that there are good things in any religion! The most important point that they make however is that we are all sons and daughters of the Father… and by virtue of that fact, we need to love ALL our brothers and sisters… it definitely doesn’t say we have to agree with them!

oh… btw… I was born before 1965… just so you know.

Amen! The biggest problem that Catholics have faced in the past 40 yrs is that we were not taught why… just believe XYZ but don’t question why. I am very happy that the new evangelization starts with us knowing AND understanding our faith! Unless we know why, we can’t defend, nor can we adequately say no to the pseudo-ecumenism we are offered.

give us an example of what you consider spreading hate. I just want to make sure you are not confusing facts with - I don’t know - whatever you think is hate.

For the record, disucssion with Jews and Moslems have absolutley NOTHING to do with ecumenism or “pseudo-ecumenism.” (Don’t follow the wrong leaders about the issue of ecumenism!) Discussions with Jews and Moslems are part of inter-faith dialogue. Discussions with denominational Christians are relevant to ecumenism. Since we recognize that we do not share the Christian faith with those who practice Judaism and Islam, our role is to acknowledge and support the fact that they worship ONE true GOD. Beginning there has nothing to do with giving up our faith! On the contrary.

First, to alleviate your obvious confusion:
you are not an “us.” You are a “me.”

Second, to pull out quotes would require my returning to that odious (now locked) thread.
That won’t be happening.

that’s the first something to do when you join a forum, not after hearing a thousand time that the Bible is corrupt, the church was misguided by liers, Christians are polytheistic, Trinity was invented by Paul ecc…when you point out that the Quran is false regarding our belief, i hope no one will say this is hatred…
personal remaiks and insults should be stopped of course…

I agree with you. but, I have a problem in that so many want us to not question islam. There are some VERY disturbing surahs in the koran and hadiths. And mohammed did some VERY disturbing things. And with deception being sanctioned in the koran - how do we trust muslims? Especially when they tell us how peaceful it is and we find that they are caught with texts preaching hatred to their children, not only in the USA, but in Canada, the UK, and elsewhere - especially in muslim lands where they are not under scrutiny by the host population because they are now subjugated ones (dhimmi).

We see that slavery is still practiced to this day in islam. We caught a couple in Denver - who are now in prison - for bringing their slaves into the States with them. And we hear that the saudis regularly are trading slaves.

Why is it we cannot question this? how come the only thing we hear is that WE are supposed to accept them when they are not treating others very well in other countries? There are no laws to protect infidels, and in some instances their own women, from crimes from musims in countries where the majority are muslim with sharia law!

To say it is WE who have the problem I would say is very disingenuous.

I guess I don’t know what the good things are when I read stuff like this:
  • About jihad, ‘inner struggle’
  • JIHAD IS ALLAH’S COMMAND - Surah 9:29
  • Those who reject Islam must be KILLED - Surah 4:89
  • For the Unbelievers are open enemies to you - Surah 4:101
  • FIGHT those who believe not in Allah nor the last day - Surah 9:29
  • KILL them [non-Muslims] wherever you find and catch them - Surah 2:191
  • If anyone desires a religion other the Islam, it will never be accepted of him - Surah 3:85
  • Whoever changes his Islamic religion, KILL him - Surah 9:57
there is more - this is just an example. And when the peaceful passages are told to us they are assuming that we don’t know about the violent passages abrogating those peaceful passages.

I would just like to know what is the good. Please tell me.

I would say you are being very unChristian in your response. You cannot give me an example without having to pull out a quote is not a very good excuse. As for the ‘me’ vs ‘us’ - just a matter of words. You are confusing facts with emotions and I need to have an example of what you consider bashing.

A fact is not a bash. An emotional response to someone such as name calling (eg: islamophobes, etc) is a bash.

Have to wonder if you’ve ever studied the Gospels with the energy you’ve given to the Koran.
The goodness of Islam is the worship of One God - the very God we worship.

  1. You can say whatever you want, of course. Free country and all of that.
  2. As for “an excuse?” I don’t need one. Free country and all of that.
  3. Your needs don’t interest me. Sorry about that.

Have to wonder if you’ve ever studied the Gospels with the energy you’ve given to the Koran.

Yeah, I even study them with a group of people from the church. And I also discuss them with fundamentalists.

So their behavior - lying, slaughtering non-muslims worldwide, only worrying about their image and not doing anything to stop the jihadists and instead supporting it via muslim charities, etc - does not count? Even bin laden prays daily and worships the ‘one true god’. and calls for the death of infidels all the time. Look at Ahmadinejad - he prays for the ‘one true god’ and he sends in jihadists (hezbollah and his Iranian jihadists) to kill all the time - as do the saudis (hamas and the Palestinians).

Muslims in Darfur pray to the ‘one true god’ and they slaughter a very peaceful group of Christians there.

Could it be there is something wrong with their concept of a ‘one true god’? Something wrong with the teachings in their koran?

I have already posted about jihad - and in the closed website some quotes from mohammed which are not very nice to us infidels. I use ‘us’ because no matter what you think - you, and me, and any non-muslim - are infidels.

  1. You can say whatever you want, of course. Free country and all of that.
  2. As for “an excuse?” I don’t need one. Free country and all of that.
  3. Your needs don’t interest me. Sorry about that.
thanks - I figured I would get an even more unChristian response from you.

You don’t have to apologize for the way you ‘feel’, just allow others to do the same.

Not tolerating those who disagree with you is very common these days.

Speaking against terrorism is understandable.

Speaking against Judaism and/or Islam is to go against Chruch Teaching.

Good bye now.
To bad her “good bye” is not “good bye”, as our no is to be no.

When a person professing to be nominally Christian states, as was done in that other thread, that they “have problems with” some vital and central aspect of Christianity, and that they are attracted to islam because it seems to offer a solution to their “problem”, it is incumbent for those more knowledgable about this “problem” to help the doubter understand why their problem is no cause to leave the better choice of religion.

Now, what happens when this person, who says they want help, is actually only interested in getting a fight started between supporters of what they say they USED to believe and those who are supporters of what they MIGHT IN FUTURE want to believe?

The actual desire of the OP was to use the generated EMOTION of the “fight” to decide, and show to others so that they might decide, on which side “won” and be influenced one way or the other by that show of emotion.

What we SHOULD have done is simply say to this OP was, “Read your catechism and pray on it”, but we, as usual, took the bait and created a fight between those who cow-tow to islam so as not to offend them and those who are more or less crude in pointing out islam’s “negative points”.

This, I believe, was the real very anti-Catholic reason for igniting the “fight”. The OP wanted to show that Christians will invariably turn on themselves before they turn on a rival!

While I do believe that islam is easily described as what it is, a kernal of truth from revelation and natural law wrapped in an enslaving mechanism, one of it’s greatest “military” (fight for minds) strengths is that it focuses it’s efforts on finding disagreement in TACTICS of it’s “rival” and through “intellectual kindness” causes it’s rival’s factions to fight each other.

The OP was simply doing as islam says to do with the infidel. Divide them, make them weaken themselves, and conquer them.

Touche to the OP. Well done. Do I like that the OP has done so well? Of course not, but credit must go where credit is due.

So, what’s the remedy for us Christians? Make declarative statements about Catholic dogma, make declarative statements about islam with citations without EVER responding emotionally about ANY conclusion of said declarative statements, and never draw or voice any emotional conclusion about any declarative statement made by ANYONE.

To boil it down: Make only declarative statements!

NEVER respond emotionally to anything said by anyone.

The first one to draw and voice an emotional conclusion LOSES!
