Speaking in Tongues and healing miracles in the Catholic church

One thing that interests me is how in the bible, signs and wonders are supposed to follow those who have the Holy Spirit. Protestant and Evangelical churches have a lot of members speaking in tongues and also conduct healing services. Many people have been truly healed at these services.
Why do we not see these manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the Catholic church?

Unfortunately, since they are “too Catholic” for most people, they are either ignored, dismissed, or attributed to more sinister causes.

A perfect example are the healing miracles at Lourdes. I saw a program on t.v., where one detractor tried to minimize the miracles by stating “there are ONLY 18 verifiable miracles associated with Lourds”. My response was …ONLY!!! That’s 17 more than it takes to impress me.

If a disease has a spontaneous remission rate of 1/100 per year, double with strong autosuggestion and dietary improvement, so up to 1/50 per year, and 100 people in a congregation have it, none of whom goes to a doctor or seeks any treatment except prayer, it’s expected that naturally two will recover in the following year, one in six months. It’s within the range of probability that up to 20 will recover in six months, 25 in a year or that they will all die from it over about a 23-year period. If 21 recover in six months, 26 in a year, 35 in two years, you are seeing something unusual. Some of these are indeed miracles, but we don’t necessarily know which ones. A verified miracle has to be a certian one, after thorough investigation has ruled out all possible natural explanations. Sometimes actual miracles happen and aren’t verifiably miraculous. Sometimes natural things happen and seem possibly miraculous. It’s hard to be sure sometimes how supernatural an event was.

the Holy Spirit guides and protects the Catholic Church as he has done from the beginning. for more outward manifestation of the charismatic gifts among Catholics, search on Catholic Charismatic Renewal. This is an authentic spiritual expression among Catholics.

we have sacraments of spiritual and physical healing, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, which definitely invoke the grace of Christ and power of the Holy Spirit, and have since Christ founded the Church. We have an unbroken record, beginning with Peter and the other apostles, miraculous healings, which occur, as did the miracles of Christ, as signs to benefit the faith of observers.

Yeah but l mean miracles worked by leaders of the church, not at Sacred sites like Lourdes (l think it was Christopher Dawkins whose TV series you are talking about). Also what about speaking in tongues?

Some of what you see and hear about it not 100% true. Not that anyone is intentionally trying to deceive, but some people feel that they MUST show these things in order to be “SPirit filled.” I know for a fact here in Alabama, some speaking in tounges is staged. I also know that Benny Hinn has been investigated by other Protestants and NONE of his healings have panned out.

These gifts of the Spirit are just that:gifts. Not everyone gets them. I am unimpressed when I see them manifested UNTIL they are confirmed and verified. Jesus said that we should need no sign

Yeah, you have a point. Jesus did tell us to be careful because even greater miralcles can be worked by those He did not send…And they are gifts. l think many Protestant groups mistakenly identify a spirit filled person more by his ‘‘gifts’’ than his ‘‘fruits’’, which is the wrong way around…

Catholics can be the same way. We try to out-Jesus each other without seeing that to be Christ-like is to serve and suffer, not preach and condemn

• yes, we do. My cousin just got healed recently.
• My mom who could walk much due to nervous system problem - now she could walk and do stuff in the backyard.
• My mom’s friend go healed and a tumor disappeared so that she didn’t have to have surgery.
• most of all, people got healed spiritually and physical healings are the manifestation of that.
• my life has been changing after attending a retreat (Life in Spirit).

One thing I wanted to emphasize is that those without those gift can not be considered as without any gifts of the Holy Spirit - Not everybody has the same gift as St. Paul said.
