I am friends with Pentecostal friends as well as charismatic Evangelicals and Catholics. They all say that they speak in tongues and that it is the Holy Spirit making this happen. Yet when I hear them speaking in tongues all I hear is babble. I’ve lived in many different countries where I couldn’t understand the language and I pretty much know how another language sounds: there’s order, structure, and cadence. You can tell a language is being spoken. However, when my friends are speaking tounges it is stuff like “habba habba lalalala…” There’s nothing that suggests an acctual language. Most of the time it’s the same few sounds repeated over and over again.I have only heard someone speaking a language once and it stuck out from an entire church filled with “babababababa” stuff.
How is this babble “speaking tongues”? When I read the scriptures I see “speaking in tongues” as something the Holy Spirit uses to reach out to someone by allowing you to speak their language. After all, languages are also known as “tongues”.
What’s the deal with speaking tongues and all the babbling?
