Speaking in tongues?

Does anyone personally know a priest or religious sister who speaks in tongues? Not in Brazil, but a local person?

Is there any saints that were not of Jesus’ time that spoke in tongues? This may help too.

Is there any incident where a priest started speaking in tongues while celebrating mass? I would think that the Holy Spirit is very present at this time.

I witnessed many lay people speaking in tongues, but never a priest or sister., during normal prayertime or mass. Protestant ministers yes, priests no.

I have known many. I came into the Charismatic Renewal while in WI while in the midst of personal crisis. The retreat center where I made my Easter retreat was run by Marians and was 50 miles from where I lived. That’s how far I drove for weekly prayer meetings.
I know many Franciscan priests and nuns who are Charismatic. The last time I went to a FIRE rally, it was concelebrated by 2 bishops, including my home bishop. I was surprised by the number of Charismatic priests available for confession.
St. Paul calls the gift of tongues the least of the gifts so most who have this gift of grace don’t really speak about it much. Even as you read stories from and about the Saints, you can intimate who may had had the gift although I’m not sure if it is explicitly mentioned. One example that comes to mind is St. Ignatius.
I have been witness to priests as they became a part of the Charismatic Renewal and received this gift of grace. The last time was just before a healing Mass. The priest was assistant pastor of a local parish. The power that flowed out of him during the laying of hands on the sick after Mass was amazing.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sister Thea Bowman at the retreat center where I first became a part of the Charismatic Renewal. nbccongress.org/publications/black-authors/thea-bowman.asp
I wouldn’t expect you to witness a priest or religious praying in tongues during normal prayer time, unless it is a Charismatic prayer meeting or Mass since they are ministering to the whole Church, and not simply those graced with the gift. The first person I told was my parish priest, but privately. Most often when I do pray “in the spirit” as praying in tongues is often called, I do so privately unless it is part of a prayer group. Likewise when I told my mother, again it was privately, and it was she who introduced me to a neighbor as her “Charismatic daughter.” If there is little emphasis on the gift throughout the history of the Church, it may well be because the Saints and the Church at large have chosen to minimize its importance.

I also know of a Monsignor who went to a prayer house that was dedicated to help priests that were slipping away from the Faith. He went there to pray for dear priest friend and discovered that it was a group of charismatic priests that ran the house of prayer. The Monsignor ended up receiving an abundance of grace for himself, a spiritual renewal. Came back home and began preaching to the parish, he was considering retiring, but even in his old age, he was energized. It wasn’t long after that that he past away. He told a friend of his not to pray for him to regain his health, he was ready to go! So many people, Catholics still do not understand the movement of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is moving strongly towards making Christians realize their own priesthood, received in Baptism. A discovery for many of us. The world needs Evangelizers to spread the “Good News” of Jesus Christ. There aren’t enough of priests to do this. China alone has aproximately one billion, three hundred million people, and India has about one billion. We in USA have aproximately three hundred million, something to consider.

Anytime one who promotes Jesus Christ, you can be certain the Holy Spirit is there! I consider the main reason some secularism entered the Church is because they got away from Jesus Christ, they ceased to be Christio-centric, not the Church as a whole, but individuals in high-places. We had an exodus of priests and some nuns, and great sex scandal. If one rejects grace, it is given to another, God’s grace does not return to Him empty, and unfruitful! It is also the time for “the lay apostolate” as explained in Vatican ll, where each member has a role to play in the life of the church, his and her own priesthood.

One of the first witnesses I heard was a priest who was considering leaving the priesthood just before he received the Release of the Holy Spirit. It is so amazing when a priest is thus empowered. Many of the young men entering the seminary today, moved by grace, are coming from the Charismatic Renewal.

To answer another earlier poster’s question - yes, studies have been done such as you suggested and no, no interpretation could be offered; at least not in more accademic type studies.

In the studies and obvervations I have done (granted they were not massively in-depth, but definitely done on an academic level (Linguist)), most of the interpretations I have observed are very general - rarely, at least in what I have seen and read of, do interpretations go into specifics or minute detail.

Gospel accounts of what supposedly took place at Pentecost describe what is essentially a texbook example of "xenoglossia’, not glosolalia/speaking in tongues. There are no modern cases of legitimate, unexplained xenoglossia; all known cases that have been studied (some in quite a bit of depth) can be explained.

Please note that I am not knocking glosolalia as a form or means of strengthening or heightening one’s spiritual experience - it’s just not anything that is ‘devine’ in nature; at least from a linguistic standpoint.

The first charismatic event I went to was a Mass (the prayer group had an annual Mass) and afterwards people could go forward to be prayed over. I don’t recall the priest praying in tongues during Mass but he did when he prayed over me.

There was also a charismatic conference annually and the first year I went the Bishop was the main celebrant and homilist. I don’t know if he prayed in tongues, and I never heard anyone mention that he did. BTW the church where is was held was packed and when the people prayed (many were singing) in tongues it was this beautiful, harmonious sound, like what I imagine angels sound like when they sing or pray.

Again I state, it is not a matter of reason, or even witness, but a matter of faith, is the Bible divine in nature, it’s claimed to be the “Inspired word of God” constituting along with apostolic tradition as the Catholic Church’s deposit of Faith. Who has known the mind of God, except those He reveals it to. Divine inspiration is the key to understanding the operations of the Holy Spirit, not scientific study

What does “inspired word of God” mean? It does not mean that God dictated His word to secretaries who wrote down what He said word for word. The author of each book of the Bible wrote for a particular audience and using different genres. In order to understand Scripture, we need to ask, “What is the author trying to tell us?” The Bible is not a science book, but a religious book. A person who does not believe might read the Bible and not understand what is written just as many did not understand the parables that Jesus told. They see merely the literary value. On the other hand, if we trust that “God’s word will not be void,” it has the power to transform our lives.
In an earlier post, I stated that discernment was a necessary part of any spoken prophecy or word of knowledge. After the prophecy has been spoken there will be a confirmation either by another person either similar prophecy or a scriptural passage. What the first person has said will be restated using different words. None of this is preplanned.
Because we have a shared Faith, we can compare it to something with which we are familiar. Very often within these forums, somebody will ask a question and the responses are essentially the same.
Since it does come back to faith, the experience is very often beyond words that a person who has not had a similar experience will understand.
Fr. D’Orio had a worldwide healing ministry. When he was asked why not everybody was healed that came to him, he responded, “That is God’s way of reminding me that it is He who heals and not me.”

I attended one service where the congregation spoke in “tongues”. I dont know what the original greek says on the matter. If there is some higher form of speech that we can attain then I would expect it to have some sort of consistency across the board no matter whether it be in an american congregation or a chinese congregation or some other congregation yet tongues seem to be nothing more than individuals speaking nonsense. Which leads me to believe that whats said isnt important. Its the “state” of being itself that is important. Its a state of euphoria or sudden grace that puts the person into a fit…no, fit isnt quite the right word, but hopefully yall understand what Im driving at.

People who speak in tongues don’t go into “fits”. They are in complete control of themselves. I’ve said it before, but one of the times I pray in tongues most often is when I’m driving my car. I am in complete control of my senses.

The original Greek speaks of “languages” and in the context 1 Corinthians 14 is speaking of languages unknown to both the speaker and the hearer. Paul says, “For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”

Paul also says that “14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.” It’s not the words, and it’s not the “state” of being. Instead, the value that someone gets from praying in tongues is that when we pray in a tongue we are praying in the spirit.
Is there any incident where a priest started speaking in tongues while celebrating mass? I would think that the Holy Spirit is very present at this time.
No one starts to spontaneously speak in tongues just because the “Holy Spirit is very present at this time.” The Apostle Paul was quite clear in 1 Corinthians 14:

26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and** the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.**

Simply put, Paul is telling us that whether it be an unknown language or a prophecy, the speaker has control of his or her own spirit. They are not suddenly going to lose control of their mouth and start speaking outside of their control. The Holy Spirit is not like a demonic spirit. He does not deal in compulsion. People who speak in tongues can control when they do so.

Therefore, it is quite understandable why you may never have witnessed a priest start suddenly speaking in tongues during mass because I can’t imagine any good reason for a priest to do that anyway, unless it happened to be a charismatic mass.
