I’ve met only one person who claimed she could speak in tongues, but she never demonstrated it. I’m very skeptical about the whole idea.
Yeah,I am still pretty skeptical but until the Church presents some sort of doctrine on the practice I leave it at that.

The only person I ever heard speaking this supposedly unknown prayer language was actually yelling. During the Divine Mercy chaplet he suddenly got very loud and went into some sort of trancelike state. It was incredibly disturbing. When he left the church i saw hm again walking down a winding stairway of rough hewn logs and gravel. His head was thrown back at a very sharp angle as if he was looking directly above and both arms thrown up in the air.

Peace be with you Brother/sister fred conty and Regina7.

You asked me a question; what did I understand when he was speaking in tongues.

I ask that you permit me to reply this in a private message to you both.

Andrew.

Well, they cant just turn it on and off, they dont control when it happens, why would you be skeptical about it though, its in the bible. Faith is ALL about believing in the un-seen anyway.

And if this situation played out with different people (or the same) and a person spoke in tongues I can imagine that the criticism would be that she was showing off.

With all my humblest apologies to Mikekle, I must state that we CAN ‘turn it on or off’ whenever we want to. Tongues is the only charismatic gift, which we have full control over; not prophecy, words of knowledge, interpretation etc.

The real gift of Tongues can be used or not used, used whenever we want (if I wish to use it now, I can) can be speeded up and slowed down. This is totally under my command and control. I only do not know, nor can I control, what I will say, as that is prompted by the Holy Spirit at that time.

I hope this is clear.

The person with the gift of tongues can control when it happens. They don’t turn it on and off but yield to the Holy Spirit.

Another way of looking at this is that it is speech. I can control my speech, how and when I pray.
If I am walking along the sidewalk praying the rosary and somebody approaches, I might stop as we pass each other. This has happened and the person will not know that I am praying the rosary unless he/she looks at my hand and sees the rosary wrapped around it. Once passed each other, I continue with my rosary.
It’s no different when I’m praying in tongues. There’s generally nobody around. When I see somebody approaching I may stop for awhile until the person has passed by.
