What have you ladies done with your dresses?

My mother in law got mine cleaned. It is sealed in a nice box. I hate to open it because it’s perfectly wrapped…but I’ve heard so many horror stories about dresses disintegrating. It wasn’t technically preserved…so I’m sure it’s okay. Plus it was the best dry cleaner in town.

I think it’s a dress that will stand the test of time. I hope one of my descendants will like it!

Mine has been cleaned, but not perserved. It lives at my parents’ house in Pennsylvania until Nathan and I decide for sure where we will settle down and buy a house.

A note of interest. Long before the preservation of dresses, they seemed to endure. I have pictures of one of my grandmothers in her wedding dress and then wearing that same dress on her fiftieth anniversary. Don’t know if it was buttoned in the back or not, but it was kept in a trunk in the basement.

I gave my dress to a friend of mine who gave it to a freind of hers who was getting married. The bride just got married a few weeks ago in " my dress" that I wore 2 1/2 years ago. I dunno. I hate storing stuff… so I figured if someone else could use it…🤷

Mine’s still hanging in my closet… not even boxed up or anything. 😛 I really, really want to have part of it made into a christening gown for our future children, but I’ve got to find somebody to do it for me!

Mine hasn’t been cleaned and it’s still hanging in my closet in a hanger with the bag they gave me at the store to cover it.

But they do stay preserved in boxes. My mom still had her gown back in the 90s (she got married in '76) and it was still in perfect condition. She was only keeping it for us (since she is divorced and remarried). She sold it when we came to the US in '94.

My ex-gown from my ex-wedding was the big ball gown style, it’s in the box in the attic. I would love to sell it, but there isn’t anyone who wants to buy a used wedding gown from the 80’s - even if it is amazingly gorgeous, and you can’t find hardly anything with sleeves these days. Most donation places only sell them to make money, and I have not found one that really speaks to me. I may take it apart and sell it in pieces for custom gowns - the satin and lace are just exquisite. I have NO sentimental attachment to it, I’ve only kept it 'cause it’s pretty. :o

My REAL wedding gown from my REAL wedding 😃 is in a box in my guest room. It was an ivory pearl covered evening gown with a sheer lace shrug. I am not sure what I want to do with it, but being married only two years on the 30th this month, I’m not ready to part with it. 🙂

had it cleaned and nicely packed for storage by the cleaners, but it got caught in a basement flood a few years later, so no dress. Wish I had followed first plan to make DD’s christening dress from it, but it was velvet and all of my kids were baptized in the summer. oh well.

It was supposedly a German tradition to hang the bridal veil over the bassinet. Isn’t that neat? My grandma says her mother did that.

I’ve heard of ladies sending their dresses back to Poland when it was under communism. Not exactly sure what they did with them. Our neighbor joked that they cut it into handkerchiefs… 🤷

My Mum just did something very neat with her wedding dress. She cut it up and made it in to a baptism gown for my grand niece.

There are some orders who still wear a wedding dress when they take vows, those ladies would take a donated dress and use it in a beautiful way 🙂

Another idea is to see if you Parish would like it, there may be a bride who comes along and does not have a dress and would be thrilled.

My dh and I never had a wedding…we were planning it, family got in the way:shrug: …wanted to run everything–we decided to elope.

Then, several years and 2 kids later, had our wedding blessed in the Church, so I didn’t wear white at that point. lol 😉

Here is the type of dress I had in mind…I had always wanted something simple and elegant…and I was a size 4 back then, pre babies…so it would have worked out quite nicely. lol 😛 I wonder if it would be dumb for hubby and me to buy what we would have chosen had we had a wedding…and get photos done? He asked me about that recently–what do you think? Just photos for us to have and cherish?

I took my dress out after 26 years of marriage (we are 34 years married now). I felt so compelled to wear it again…it was not dry-cleaned or anything, just put in a box. It was in perfect condition and when I tried it on…it still fit! …well, the zipper made it up my back until where my breasts are, and I could not go any further without ruining the zipper. Well, my body changed over the years…I am a size 6 (Macy’s) now…and my grandmother told me that when the girls in the family turn 50, our boobs get bigger…

Gave my dress to Madonna House in Combermere…they certainly could use the luxurious material. My daughter pointedly told me she would never wear it… …and vehemently told me she will be going to the tropics to get married with no recpetion, etc etc etc:rolleyes:

I had my dress custom made (back in '88) and when my husband’s oldest brother got married (in '92), I loaned the dress to his bride-to-be. At the time, I fully expected to have a daughter to pass it on to. Ten years later, my BIL was widowed with three children (the oldest is a girl) and my husband and I had one son by adoption. So I gave the dress to my niece because she’s the closest thing to a daughter I’ll have and I’ve been like another mom to her. She’ll be 14 this fall and talks about her dream wedding someday with her wearing “my mom’s and Aunt Amy’s dress”!

I absolutely LOVED my wedding dress when I found it! BUT…

Hate to say it, but I tossed mine in the washer (still didn’t get the black off the bottom of it where it got dragged all over the outdoor reception) and have it in the closet. I let my nieces play dress-up in it. They are always THRILLED and can’t believe they get to wear the wedding dress! I won’t wear it again and don’t expect it to be worn by my daughter (heck… what if she wants to pick out her own dress), so I thought it would be best to give the girls a smile! True Kodak moments 🙂

I love these stories.

Mine is under our bed. I am not sure why. I did rip a huge gash in the back and the bottom is filthy from dancing so it’s not like I can do anything else with it. It was cleaned but that is the best they could do. I put it on every once in awhile. It still fits because if I gain weight it is usually below the waist area, which is the skirt!

Come to think of it my veil is under the bed, too. I love the make the baptism gown out of the bridal gown idea, but all our girls wore one that my grandmother brought over from Italy. I couldn’t pass that one up. My aunt made a christening outfit for our boys but I didn’t think to use my gown!

Gave it to St. Vincent de Paul since I couldn’t see any point in keeping it. I was never going to wear it again and didn’t want it to go to waste. I’m not a very semential person and find it easy to part with stuff.
My sister has kept hers as did my mother and grandmother. My grandmother finally gave hers to a local museum as part of their 1920s/1930 exhibition. My mum threw hers out about 20 years ago after it had hung in the back of her closet for 30+ years. My sister’s is in a box in a closet.

Now THESE are the first truly wonderful ideas I’ve heard!!! I will absolutely look into both!

Thanks ! 😃
