I am one of the members of a Catholic group, and also a non-denominational Christian group on a college campus. Several of the clubs are going to be sponsoring the production of The Vagina Monlogues, a play which has as its purpose the promotion of sexual “freedom” and “liberty,” and the proceeds of which will be donated to places such as Planned Parenthood. We wish to speak out against ths production, however there is some resistance within the groups.

Please direct me towards any Bible passages which would help me to support the idea that this is important. Church documents would be useful also, but I mostly need Scripture so that I can present it to the non-denom folks.

It would be helpful to know what the resistance is.
Thanks!

We wish to speak out against ths production,
On what basis are you protesting? What is it you wish to say about the production? Have you seen a production of the Vagina Monolouges? Have you read the piece?

Do people not have the right to partake in entertainment of thier choice?

Who appointed you the censor of the peoples morals?

Who are you to decide what others should be permitted to perform or attend?

I should hope there is a great deal of resistance to such a thing.

Puleez! I can protest anything that I want, correct? People are completely free to ignore me, correct? Why is is that people are censoring when they disagree with you but excercising free speech when you agree with them?

Why should we allow our tax dollars to go to the production of garbage and the "Monologues: are garbage without a fight? I don’t want to send my kids to college to have my money wasted on crud like this.

**YOU ARE TOTALLY CORRRECT! **

As a taxpayer, I absolutely agree I would not want my tax dollar to go for this garbage, and it IS garbage.

As far as scriptures to present, I kind of use as my “motto” to live by, Philippians 4:8-9, and Vigina Monologues surely does NOT fit there. Encouraging any kind of sex outside of marriage does not promote purity, loveliness, good reputation, excellence, praiseworthiness or peace but quite the opposite. I don’t know how anyone who considers themself a Christian could be “for” having this horrible production come to their campus. And as a woman, Christian or not, I would find it insulting. Ugh.

Ahhhh!!! If this were only the worst of it!
In the interest of decency, we won’t go into the “worst of it!” I read a portion of the script for V-Monologues and became ill. I couldn’t even finish the page.

Instead of reading it, should have watched the old Saturday Night Live skit of Phil Hartman impersonating Charlton Heston doing the Vagina Monologues; thats some funny stuff. Makes you realize how silly that play really is.

Nothing like some humor to point out the absurdity of something! Kind of reminds you of The Emporer’s New Clothes, if you are familiar with that story.

Perhaps you can contact Feminists For Life and see if they have anything on the V-Monologues and why they are degrading and not “liberating” to women. They do a lot of work on college campuses, but I don’t know if they have anything on this.

Keep up the good work Lazerlike42! We are called to live are faith, not roll over and play dead!

Thank heavens we are finally seeing some changes in the administration of some Catholic colleges. Fr. Jenkins, the new president at Notre Dame, is only allowing for this year that the VM be in a classroom setting and not allowed to raise money. It might very well be the last year.

Fr. Shanley, the new president of Providence, has a very well written letter on this topic. He will not allow it on campus at all. You might find some good quotes here:

providence.edu/Administration/Presidents+Office/Vagina+Monologues.htm

It is bad enough that this garbage is allowed at state schools. But there is no excuse for it at a Catholic school of any type. Email both of these priests with your support.

I think I read that the president of the U of Portland would not allow it either, but I cant’ find that source.
Keep praying for these brave people and for more like them. You can bet you would never see a play about Catholic values or the Theology of the Body at a state school.

I have not read the entire piece, but know more than enough about it. We do not intend to infringe upon the rights of anyone to partake in the entertainment of their choice, however we wish to make people aware just what that entertainment truly is, and truly does, and truly means to society and to their own lives.

This play does nothing less than equate the entire meaning, substance, and worth of a woman’s body, heart, soul, and mind to her genitals.

Just thought I’d let everyone know - it went great. I prayed a rosary beforehand, and asked God for the words, and out of nowhere I came up with this 20-25 minute speach about why we should oppose this, and I made points I had never thought of before, and we voted unanimously to do it! 👍 :amen:

Ask the group if they like supporting a cause that supports abortion. Also, ask them why this production which supposedly is in support of stopping domestic violence deals very little with domestic violence. If anything, by picturing women through their vaginas, they only seem to objectify women in the same way rapist and abusers do. It is the mentality that women are reduced to sexual objects that is the main cause of the problems. their program only goes to fuel what they fight. And as Christ said “A house divided cannot stand!” there is your bible quote; how can christians stand for christ if they support such garbage that has no redeeming value.

BTW: Luckily my school, Marquette blocked it from coming on campus, but who knows for how long sadly.

You claim to KNOW what the play is about, yet by your own admission you haven’t read it. And you’re still trying to prevent others from doing so?

What college are you attending?

One does not need to sit in a pile of dung to know it is disgusting.

One does not need to read the V. Monologues to know it is disgusting. The name alone is inappropriate.

We don’t have to experience things to know they are bad. I’ve never killed anyone, yet I know it is bad. I’ve never shot herion in my veins but I know it is bad. I don’t read porn and yet I know it is bad…I hope you catch my drift.

BTW, I have a dtr. at Boston College and I remember visiting her campus and seeing the advertisements for V. Monologues. I also saw the same thing a few years ago when I was visiting Notre Dame.

What on earth is inappropriate about the name “Vagina Monolouges”? The word “vagina”? Why is that word inappropriate?

I believe your “drift” is excessively simplistic. There are times and places for killing (defending one’s loved ones or country) and for heroin (which is simply an unrefined form of morphine, after all). How do you define “porn”? There are times and places for depictions of human nudity and even very graphic depictions of human sex acts (marriage manuals? help overcoming sexual problems?). You are conflating “things” with the use to which they are put or the intention of the maker.

I repeat. What is your objection to the Vagina Monolouges? How do you “know” it is “bad”? Someone told you? Who? Had they seen or read it?
