Is it a sin to put my adult child in supervised living? I am torn up thinking about this. Although it would have to be approved i am still wondering if this is a sin and what would god have thought of a parent doing so even though she is an adult.

I would not think it is a sin. My DH has a brother who is marginalized and his mother has always kept him at home but he can’t do anything for himself that he maybe could have done if she had allowed him to get some outside help. Now she is in her 80s and who is going to care for her boy who is in his 60s??? He could have learned some survival skills… I don’t know the particulars of your daughters condition. But letting them learn some life skills I don’t think would be a sin… Praying for you.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

What makes you think that it might be a sin? What sin would it be?

Absolutely not! When my uncle (who had Downsyndrome) was here on earth, my Grandparents put him in supervised living. (And he had a great time, over all!) He usually went back to their home on the weekends. I think he felt pretty independent. You need to do your research on the availability, inspection checks, and etc. Also, you are the caretaker. And caretakers need to not neglect themselves. You may be feeling guilty about needing help. We all need help in this life.
P.s. GOD BLESS YOU!!

@hikerfrog No as long as you don,t over do it,Give them more love and be patient with them.

Sirach 7:23 Do you have children? Discipline them,and make them obedient from their youth.
24 Do you have daughters? Be concerned for their chastity,and do not show yourself too indulgent with them.25 Give a daughter in marriage, and you complete a great task;but give her to a sensible man.

Sirach 26:10 Keep strict watch over a headstrong daughter,or else, when she finds liberty, she will make use of it.11 Be on guard against her impudent eye,and do not be surprised if she sins against you.

Sirach 42:9-12 A daughter is a secret anxiety to her father,and worry over her robs him of sleep;
when she is young, for fear she may not marry,or if married, for fear she may be disliked;10 while a virgin, for fear she may be seduced and become pregnant in her father’s house;or having a husband, for fear she may go astray,or, though married, for fear she may be barren.11 Keep strict watch over a headstrong daughter,or she may make you a laughingstock to your enemies,a byword in the city and the assembly of the people,and put you to shame in public gatherings.
See that there is no lattice in her room,no spot that overlooks the approaches to the house.
12 Do not let her parade her beauty before any man,or spend her time among married women;

Ephesians 6:4 And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 4:1-9 So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God with which I am charging you. 3 You have seen for yourselves what the Lord did with regard to the Baal of Peor—how the Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 while those of you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today.

5 See, just as the Lord my God has charged me, I now teach you statutes and ordinances for you to observe in the land that you are about to enter and occupy. 6 You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!” 7 For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is whenever we call to him? 8 And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today?

9 But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children—

I guess it’s guilt that is making me feel like it’s a sin. Like I am turning away from still caring for her. Resources are scarce or not enough where I live and i become frustrated. Thank you all and may god bless each of you!

Your duty us to do the best for your child, which it sounds like this may be the very best.
Be at peace. It’s easy to understand how you feel. There’s no reason to think he will feel left, and you still love her with all your heart. It would be far worse if something happened to you and then she was uprooted into something new, without any period of adjustment.
God bless you.

I can only suggest talking to your Diocese about resources in regards to your needs. Take care, you are not alone!

No, it’s not a sin, and she might even enjoy having her “own place”.

Depending on how high functioning she is, and how much money you have, you could even buy a home for her and hire caregivers around the clock (pricey, but it’s been done.)

You will still have to advocate for her, visit the home frequently (sometimes unannounced), keep an eye on her general health and emotional status.

There may even be caregiver support groups you can join who can give you tips on pitfalls to avoid, etc.

TALK to your Pastor before deciding

I think the moral dilemma is are you doing this because it would be BEST for him/her, OR because it is more convenient for you. Note please I did not say “best” for you; that is the question to be resolved.

Talk to Father and pray about it. And NO, I don’t think that it would be a sin.

May God guide your path,
Patrick

Glory be, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
