In the Gifts of the Indulgence document, it states:

7. Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.

So the plenary indulgences from Nov 1 to Nov 8 are actually unique in that they can only be applied for the Holy Souls. Ordinarily, indulgences (partial and plenary) can be obtained either for oneself or a Holy Soul.
Thank you for that info.

Yes, the decedent need not be buried in the cemetery where you will offer the prayer for him. My parents are buried in another state, but I offered a separate day’s plenary for each of them in the cemetery where I live now. Also my grandparents. I think I got them all covered, when you consider that I have 8 separate days to make the offering, one for each person, and I’ve done this for a couple years now = 16 persons.

Yes, your confession is still good. 😉
Good for you, wonderful :). And thank you!!
So, I will try to walk to the cemetary again this afternoon… except if I really don’t feel good, I got a headache and the sun is still quite strong these days… If I don’t make it, I could still go to another church that happens to be open in the evening and say the other prayers there, right, even if I took communion in the morning? Or does the intention with communion have to be with one specific indulgence?
Hm. Oh,whatever, I’ll try to make it to the cemetary this afternoon, if I don’t make it, still time to think of something else.

No need to be so nervous about these things. I am -FIGHTING HARD- working on overcoming scrupulosity and have to get a handle on my feelings about faith related things. LOVE is what counts!! And no need to fear all the possibilities of what might all go wrong, because the Lord is my shepard (Psalm 23) :).

The offering for the Pope probably are best said in a church… or at the cemetary? Well, going to the 10.30 mass this morning, so if I am little early I’ll pray for them there.
And that is all, right? I’ll be going to communion during mass (no problem using the same mass for the Sunday obligation as for the intention, right?), confession is done… attachment to any minor sin… well, that only God knows if there is anything in me .

And wonderful that you have been making it to the cemetary so often. Where I lived before, that would have been easy. But to make the walk of almost an hour each way also on days when I work, or pay the bus fare each day with an already tight budget… would be a bit much; I must be careful now to not star feeling scrupulous/guilty about not going every day. I will try today, health and circumstances permitting (this is not a promise, but a decision I am taking, and I am free to change my mind. Saying this because I know how scrupulous I have been in the past. Must do this in freedom and love!!! 🙂 ).

There is no requirement to say the prayers for the pope’s intention either at the church or the cemetery. Just as long as you say them, but being that so few are needed (Our Father and Hail Mary), I usually do it at the time I say the prayers for the departed. Your best bet is to go to the church to fulfill the plenary requirement for All Souls’ Day, rather than walk a mile to the cemetery. The latter would be a good option only if you can go to mass during the 3rd thru the 8th of Nov. and then go to the cemetery, since you need to receive communion for each plenary. So, that seems to be out of the question for you, if you work or can’t get to mass the rest of this week and also go to the cemetery.

The extra blessing this year is that Nov. 2 (All Souls Day) falls on Sunday, so we will automatically be in a Church to fulfill the plenary. Next year, it will fall on a Monday, and we would need to make a special trip to the Church, although receiving communion, confession, and prayers for the pope will be ok during the 20-day time frame. If you want to receive the plenary on each of the 8 days of November, then 8 separate communions would be needed.

God’s Blessings to you!

Going to mass during the week is no problem, there are so many churches right around me. Only the cemetary is far away.

BUT since today I have time, I decided to do the one with the cemetary today, because the other one with the prayers said inside the church is still possible next weekend, as far as I have understood (midday Saturday to midnight Sunday). (I think so, anyway??).
But the one involving the cemetary is not possible then anymore.
And as far as I have understood it (not 100% sure), the one with the prayers in the church can only be done ONCE per year, either this weekend or the next.
SO, if I go to the cemetary today, I can do two of them, one this weekend and one the next. :=)

The only possible problem now is that during mass, yes, i did before communion think of the intention, but right while I was taking it I didn’t, of course not intentionally, but my thoughts went away from the intention while I was ingesting the Host. Later when back in my bench it came to me again. I hope this still counts?

The only thing concerning the “intention” is that you really “intend” to do all that the church requires to obtain a plenary or partial indulgence. It doesn’t need to be “intended” at the moment you receive communion, go to the cemetery, or say the prayers, etc. It suffices that God knows you are fulfilling all the conditions granted by the church to obtain the plenary. That may be a passive, or indirect intention. He sees the heart.

Bumping this because I THINK (correct me if I am wrong) that today is the Sunday on which one can again/still do that indulgence for a soul in purgatory where you have to do those special prayers in a church.

I have a question regarding confession. I know confession is still valid if made to a certain amount of days before and after.
But hwat is the rule for applying one confession to two different types of indulgencies?
Would my confession that I used for the indulgence that included a cemetery visit still be appliable for this one? I hope so and am planning to just go ahead and pray the indulgence, at least it will be partial, but I hope complete :).

And another question would be: One indulgence is always for ONE soul, right?

I’ve just begun drinking my first cup of coffee for the day, but I’ll give this one a shot!😃

Yes, the same confession is good for any indulgence- “special” or not.

The visit to a cemetery indulgence runs Nov.1-8th. It is still a partial indulgence if done at another time. ourladyswarriors.org/indulge/g13.htm

Also, remember that all conditions being met, you can obtain an indulgence any time you go and participate in mass. Again, ourladyswarriors.org/indulge/g50.htm
and ourladyswarriors.org/indulge/g50.htm

Hope this helps.

Yes it helps, I did do the prayers today (wasn’t sure anymore which Creed to be used, so I said both 😉 ); and I am glad to hear that my confession is still good for the other indulgence. I mean, it could have been that every indulgence needs its own confession. But I think this is more about being sure to be in a state of grace when doing it, right?

And I hope you could enjoy your coffee anyway and had a good day, Mommyof4!

🙂

edit: forget again that where you are it’s probably not evening yet. So I hope you HAVER a good day and everyone else has(had one too 🙂
