I have a question regarding saying a prayer upon hearing of someone passing. I know all and any prayers are good, however, I read once that saying 1 Apostle Creed and 3 Hail Mary’s were very beneficial for the deceased. Does anyone know more about this? Or perhaps can suggest other prayers? thanks

Traditionally it’s been:

Réquiem ætérnam dona eis, Dómine,
et lux perpétua lúceat eis.
Requiéscant in pace. Amen.

You may add other prayers as well.

“Eternal rest grant unto him/her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him/her. May he/she rest in peace.”

May his/her soul, and all the souls of the Faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen

Thank you for the replies and prayer suggestions! 👍

I have recently been saying the St. Gertrude prayer on my rosary…🙂

You know, I believe the “1 Apostle Creed and 3 Hail Marys” were suppose to be from Mother Mary to the seers of Mejourie (totally misspelled that word!). Anyone else hear this?

I remember reading about the tremendous zeal of old in this respect . . .

When a lay person died, his or her family and friends would take turns reading the entire Book of Psalms over them. THEN they continued to read the Psalms another four times throughout the night and AGAIN prior to the burial.

When a medieval Catholic bishop died in Catholic England, the book of Psalms were recited for a total of 600 times for the repose of his soul (this number was divided amongst various monastics etc).

Reciting the psalms for the dead with the prayer in Latin above after each psalm is true Catholic tradition.

My father passed away due to cancer.
I’ve had a devotion to the Divine Mercy ever since. It brought me great comfort, and I am sure Jesus was with my father. My aunts stood at the foot of the bed and led the prayer, we all followed. Of course we’d recited the rosary. I know perhaps you are looking for somehting shorter, but the DM is a powerful prayer.
