Specific RCIA rites

Hello,

I am a college student and I am seriously considering finally starting RCIA this fall (I’ve been thinking about this for a number of years) at the Catholic chapel at my school.

However, attending Mass every Sunday at that particular chapel is likely to be difficult at various times in the year, especially right in the final weeks of Lent when it seems most important. It seems from my limited observation that there are particular rites or ceremonies that candidates/catechumens (I would be a candidate) go through during Masses especially during Lent. What are these and how important are they? I know that going to Mass is important but I might be away for as much as three Sundays – the last three Sundays in Lent including Palm Sunday – and while I would go to Mass it wouldn’t be with my RCIA “class”. Does this matter?

Regarding your absences, you will find what is most helpful is to speak with the priest and he will be able to guide you, and help in any way that you require. If there is any issue it would seem unlikely that the priest would not allow some adaption to the situation

The people you’ll really need to ask are the folks running the RCIA program you’ll be attending.

In general, the rites during Lent are hugely important for CATECHUMENS. There’s much less going on for candidates. At the beginning of Lent you may participate in the Call to Continuing Conversion. All of the other rites (Rite of Election, Scrutinies) are for catechumens.

On that link, it seemed that the only “rite” for candidates is the “Penitential Rite” on the second Sunday of Lent. Is that right?
 
Related to this subject - I am starting RCIA in September. How are the lessons delivered? I’ve been told it isn’t like at college and such, but how do you learn what is being said? Does it involve note-taking and such?

It’s an optional rite, so they may or may not do it.
