Ok, I have this friend and he has just let everyone know he is gay. I told him thats fine, as long as he doesn’t engage in homosexual acts. ( did i mention he’s Catholic). But He has also ammited he has a problem with pornography. So he asked me if he goes to confession, does he have to say what kind of porn it was (gay porn) or can he just say pornography? Hope this doesn’t offend anyone.

I think for his benefit he should mention it is ‘gay porn’ …this will better help the priest understand what he is dealing with and let him know how to address this.

well said.

The purpose of the Sacrament of Reconcilliation is to reconcile ourselves with God, to heal the wound we have created. The Greek word “metanoia” is often used in conjunction with reconcilliation. It means to turn around.

I can understand your friend’s uncomfortableness with admitting fully what is going on. Humility is a hard virute. But Reconcilliation isn’t some magic formula; it isn’t like putting a coin into the slot, pushing the button, and out pops forgiveness.

Facing up to our sin, whatever it is, means facing up to it fully, and that includes laying our soul bare about what we really were about when we sinned.

Admitting part of what he was doing (pornography) and not the rest, is a bit like going to the doctor and telling him or her one of the symptoms, but not all. How can you expect healing? Or is your friend seeking healing?

Encourage him to fully use the sacrament for what it is meant to be. 👍

Great advice!

Let me add this though, PRAY for him and for his priest! Prayer is powerful!
