"Speedy" Daily Mass

Today I went to an early daily Mass at a church I’ve never been to that I found on Mass Times. This had to be the quickest daily Mass I’ve ever been to! The priest said everything very fast, making responses difficult due to speed. The Mass probably only took 15 minutes.

I’ve been at “speedy” Masses before, but none have come close to this one. Why do some priests like to say Mass so fast? 🤔
 
Well, a daily Mass usually only lasts about 25 minutes, to begin with, if there is no singing.
Could it be because people need to get to work?
Could it be that the Priest had to get somewhere else for something, but didn’t want to not say Mass for the regulars who show up?

If you have never been there before, you don’t know that it’s this way all the time, so why not give the poor priest the benefit of the doubt instead of coming here looking for answers from people who can’t give them?
 
We had a priest in one parish I attended that simply talked fast all the time. His Masses were also short, more like 18 minutes, but that was just his talking speed.

I love daily Mass so it didn’t bother me. Everyone adapted to it quite well in this parish.
 
Agree, usually early morning Masses are “cummuter Masses” for those who need to get to work. My Parish has a 6:45A Mass, that is packed with daily commuters. It usually runs 15-20 minutes, no singing & short to the point homily. We are an outer borough, it takes 1 1/2 - 2 hours for us to get to work in the city proper.

It shouldn’t be so rushed that a sense of reverence is lost, but a daily Mass could easily be said in 20 minutes. Especially if the priest skips the homily which is optional on weekdays.
 
The early morning weekday Masses are often quick because they are designed for people who are trying to get a Mass in prior to going to work. They usually go between 25 and 45 minutes. If the priest said it even quicker, it may be that he himself had another appointment.
 
This is also a good point about talking speed. In some parts of the country everybody talks fast and does everything fast, and in other parts of the country things go much slower. I have also heard people who led the Rosary at breakneck speed and others who seemed to take forever to get through one prayer.
 
Mind if I ask what age you’d say the priest is?

It might be a generational thing… 😉
 
The priest who celebrated my wedding Mass offered two daily morning Masses and they were usually under 20 min. Our wedding Mass was much longer. He had us kneeling on a kneeler for most of the Mass in front of the altar.

In college there was a parish in town that had a very quick Saturday vigil Mass. We nicknamed the parish St Domino’s - Mass in 30 minutes or less or your salvation is free.
 
I seem to recall this being “A Thing” back when I was a child in the early 1960s. It was typically for early morning low Masses. Masses seemed to get longer when they starting being in English in the mid-1960s.

Maybe it had to do with the relaxation of the fasting rules?

But of course (as others have mentioned) there was and still is a lot of variation, particularly by time of day and location.
 
This is the “thing” in Ireland. My husband jokes that when they got a new priest they decided on his “coolness” by the relative lightening speed of his Mass.
Of course, DH was a clueless little punk at the time,rofl:🤣🤣🤣

But seriously, the Irish tend to pray FAST. First time I ever prayed the rosary with his father, I was astounded, He would start the "Holy Mary Mother of God part before I’d finished the first part of the Hail Mary.

Same with the Creed in Mass.
Go figure.

Well I grew up in parishes staffed with Irish immigrant priests so… Yeah.

I also remember that many of them tended to distribute communion (at the communion rail) VERY quickly. Some of them were on to the next communicant practically before you knew the host was on your tongue.

I remember somebody joking about how his Irish grandma said the rosary so fast she got rope burn.
 
The parish I attended in NY had speedy morning masses. It was an opportunity for folks to attend and still get to work on time. It was a wonderful convenience.

The pastor at the parish where I grew up is retired from the Navy. There was flown by helicopter from ship to ship several times on a Sunday to do Mass. Masses were about 20 minutes.

It is not my parish anymore, but his Masses still are efficient and straight to the point.

Ohhh Ohhh OHHH!!!

I want a 15 minute Daily Mass.

So long as it’s reverent.

I could probably keep my kids occupied by myself during that time and definitely keep them alive for that long.
 
I didn’t know pre-work mass was a thing. 😳 Our church’s daily mass is at noon and 8:45 when the school is participating.
 
Oh yes! Pre-work Masses are HUGE. In my pre-child days I’d hit up the 7am (when I started work at 8) or the 8am (when I started work at 9)

When I had to go into the city because they needed someone, I LOVED the lunchtime Masses. Trot on down, go to Mass and eat a sandwich on the way back.

It was a perfectly lovely time in my life.
