Hello,
I’m a Religion Education student finding different ways to make teaching catechism to high school students more fun. Could anyone please help me? It would be great help for me and for my future students. Thank you. 🙂
 
First, instil into them a reverence for the sacred. Otherwise no matter how much time they spend with God, they won’t understand it.

Some good ways to spend time with God include:
  • Spend time with Jesus in the Tabernacle
  • Holy Hour of Reparation, if you have enough time
  • Holy Hour of Mercy, again if you have enough time
  • Prayer, prayer, prayer (aspirations, novemas, litanies, meditation on the Word of God, contemplation of the mysteries of Christ (the Rosary is an excellent way to do this), and just praying as the Holy Spirit inspires one to)
  • The Holy Mass (daily Mass is recommended)
  • Benediction
  • Eucharistic Procession
  • Veneration of the Divine Mercy Icon (or any Jesus icon, really)
  • Stations of the Cross
  • Tending to the poor and needy (they are Jesus in disguise)

There is a wonderful way to “teach” with the CCC called an"organic" method that I learned from Petroc Willey at a Conference in 2007. It bumped my understanding of the CCC 10,000 fold ~ and is simply enough to use with HS.

De. Wiley just came out with it in book form this year and has it also is in parts of the DVD series from EWTN called Handing on the Faith. This method is personally inspiring and catechetically profound!

introduce a different prayer method or devotion each month, such as those listed in the first response. concentrate on LOTH–in fact begin each class with a psalm taken from the appriate day and hour, and explain why and how to pray it. the rosary of course, but going in-depth on the mysteries and their scriptural source, and meditation on those scriptures. you want them to “own” the rosary. Adoration, try if your parish allows to schedule regular times, beginning with no more than 15-20 minutes, for this. beforehand explain what, why and how. and lectio divina, praying with short sections of scripture, usually the Sunday gospels.

above all–my spiritual director (a Jesuit) suggestion–teach the daily examen
once a day, usually at bedtime (but you can practice together at the end of class)
pray to the Holy Spirit for light
recall and review the events of the day
consider the feelings that arise
pray from one of those feelings
praise and thank God for all that happened
express contrition for any sins and failings
make a resolution for tomorrow (not the rest of your life, just tomorrow)
Pray the Our Father.
