Hello, my name is Anthony, and I am here for some advice. I live at home with my stepdad and my little brother whom I babysit… hes a bit older,so he dosent require a lot of attention, just more brother to brother bonding. I normally work early mornings and arrive @ home right when my stepdad is leaving for work.

The reason I tell you all that is because I am having a hard time with all that free time. I either play video games all day, or find some way to get into trouble. And the days I have off, I feel like I’m running around town, trying to fill up a void with “things to do” I seem to always fill the need to “be out” (not partying, but just away from home) What can I do to allow God to change this desire to always be rushing about? What are some stay at home hobbies that are worthwile. I wish I were perfect, but I can’t spend the whole day in prayer and reading… I thought about learning photography, and I plan on attending community college.

I’m sure you will get a lot of good suggestions for others. I don’t have many hobbies myself, so I cannot help there. But one thing I can suggest you do to fill some of that time with something good is to go to Daily Mass as often as possible. I don’t know where you live but find out if any Catholic churches in your area have daily mass in the evening. I think every Church has A Daily Mass service in the morning, but some offer more than one. It is not really a stay at home hobby, but if you can afford it and not doing it already, go to the gym and lift weights. When you start to see results, it can become a hobby.

Well you can hang out here as much as you like…but I warn you it can be addicting…😃

Stay at home hobbies…hhmmm building models is something fun. Maybe something you and your brother can do together.
Something faith connected could be making rosaries either to sell or to give away.
Gardening can be a good hobby if you have a bit of ground and if you grow veggies - you have homegrown food.

Those are the ones that just came to me…

Photography is a great hobby but not really a “stay at home” type of pursuit.

Peace
James

Thank you JR &Laughing boy… lol photography isn’t really a stay at home hobby…I guess I meant reading and learning about photography and making scrapbooks… Gardening does sound neat…

LaughingBoy, I think my best bet will be going to adoration. There are 3 local churches with 3 different times for adoration…
Thank you guys for replying

Do you like working with your hands? Are you the patient sort?

Maybe building model cars / planes

Or working on one of those ships-in-a-bottle - you can buy a whole kit

By all means learn photography. Take a class at your community college or elsewhere. My nephew learned photography and now it’s his main job and he makes good money doing it, he is a family man and has 5 children so you know it is good money. He takes pictures at schools and senior graduation pictures, also the different sports kids are in.

He photoshops many of his pictures to make them interesting and has a huge following of customers. He started out in accounting but got bored with that. It was great for him to fall back on and now it is his career. I think you will find your time reading up on photography interesting and something you can do at home.

Now with all the interesting things you can do with a computers and pictures you could make a nice career out of it. At least it is something you could fall back on like my nephew did. It’s very creative and something you would enjoy.

I would suggest trying to take an online class through the community college. (not necessarily for photography, but something you’re interested in that is offered online)

Do you know how to cook at all? You could learn (watch some food network, get some “cooking for dummies” books, etc.) and then help out with cooking meals for your brother and stepdad. Offer to go to the grocery store and take your brother along.

You could also spend some time cleaning. It’s not fun, but if it keeps you out of trouble, then why not. It doesn’t have to be cleaning the entire house every day, but you and your brother could do a few things every day and it will make a big difference. Maybe there are some odd jobs and home repair that needs to be done. Watch a you tube video and develop those life skills.

You could play board games with your brother. Take him to a local pool, bowling, go bike riding, shot some hoops, play tennis, frisbee…things to keep you both active. I assume if you’re getting bored during the day there is a good chance your brother is bored as well? Take him to the library, or anywhere else near your home that is interesting and inexpensive.

Oooooo…
Try making a pinhole camera. Then go around taking pictures. There’s lot on the web about it. You can make a camera from almost anything if you can make it light tight.

You can get some really cool looking pictures even of ordinary objects. And you can learn about photography. There are lots of ways to get photos. Some alternative photographers use very old fashioned methods, with easily obtains, harmless chemicals.

Look into it, it might be the start of a lifetime vocation, or avocation.

Or maybe learn to draw. There are many online courses, many of them are free. Once you get a few basic ideas down, you can expand as you wish.

Just remember: draw what you see, not what you think you see.
