The latter. (Of course, in the pre-Vatican II era, things were much stricter. Both Gregory XVI (1844) and Bl. Pius IX (1846) prohibited the use of Bibles translated by Protestants. Even post-Vatican II, strictly speaking, we are allowed to use only “translations approved by the Church, even if these are made in collaboration with separated brethren” (I’m paraphrasing here).

Here’s an answer from EWTN on the subject:

I remember reading the bit about giving it to a priest on some website, but I can’t find the reference now. :o If I do, I’ll post it here.
Thanks. I have no idea how I would go about burning a book, since I live in an apartment with no fireplace. Maybe that is why you take it to a priest? I tried burning blessed palms once, and it took forever and made quite a mess. I wouldn’t even attempt a book. (Fortunately, now the parish takes the blessed palms back and uses them in creating the ashes for Ash Wednesday, which is pretty darn convenient.)

Of course it would be easier to burn a book if I could borrow Usige’s band saw and just burn the pages, but even so it would probably be against my lease. 🙂

Interesting to know, though, thanks!

I’m kind of on the side of throwing them out if you no longer use them. Obviously, not to be spiteful or peevish, but just because giving them to others might spread bad information and misconceptions. Actually getting money in return for that seems a bit unfair, too.

Which then makes the Bible what, exactly?
The word of God of course. Capitals make a difference.

I was raised before I converted in a Protestant sect that actually worshiped the bible as an idol. The preacher would quote the bible with “God says” in certain book chapter and verse. He never said Luke or Paul. He made the bible God. The bible is not God.

Later I knew people who always would say 'THE WORD" meaning the bible of course.
I think that these people over emphasize the bible and deify it.
