I have a good friend who recently told me she was into talking to her spirit guide which she has named. She says the guide does not answer her back but is with her all the time. What should I tell her about this practice? I have always believed that these spirit guides were demons. Am I wrong?

I believe your first impression is more likely correct than the following poster’s suggestion.

The concept of “Spirit Guides” is not compatible with Catholic teaching. One cannot verify the identity of these spirits and the possibility of diabolical influence is great. Counsel you friend about this very dangerous practice.

I would discourage her from it. Without knowing more about what she has said about her interaction with the spirit guide and without other important information, it’s almost impossible to tell what this guide really is.

She could be mistaking it for an angel. It could be a demon or familiar spirit. I dunno. Either way, it’s against Catholic teaching and even for most Protestants. I know people who use spirit guides and mediums and I just don’t recommend it regardless.

EDIT: By the way, if a spirit came to me TELLING me they were my spirit guide and on and on, there’s a really simple test to see if they are from God or the Devil. Even though Catholics are forbidden to speak to spirits directly, as a non-Catholic, I would ask the spirit if they confessed Jesus Christ come in the flesh, the Divine Son of God and their Lord.

It sounds like senile dementia to me - obviously she talks to herself.
Why would a guardian angel reveal itself?
I’d treat her like what she is - a lonely old lady who needs a real friend to talk to.

Then we all got them. They were surprisingly easy to get as it turned out, and then they wouldn’t go away.
They always started sweet and friendly (well, most did). But they mostly turned evil by little steps. We would try to get rid of one that had turned on us by inviting a stronger one:doh2: and wind up harassed by both.
They are sometimes definitely real and dangerous.
If your friend has been talking to her guardian angel one way to find out is as Mystic Warrior suggested. Tell her, if her guide ever wants her to do anything obviously immoral, she has all the info she needs just from that alone, regardless of what the guide says about the reasons.

According to a lot of material I’ve studied (I have no direct experience), there are levels to spirit guides. That is, some are on a lower plane than others. The lower plane ones didn’t “evolve” high enough and so they are generally mischievous and will only bring you down, while highly evolved ones can actually help you.

I’ve had spirits come to me and begin to speak words of wisdom. That’s my first question to them. If they can’t pass that one, then I tell them to go away and never come back. Yes, you’re right. If a spirit tells you to do something immoral, you know they are not from the Father.

I am very thankful you got out of this. In fact, your story here reminds me a bit about Matthew Arnold’s experiences with the occult. He is now a Catholic Apologist.

When I was in RCIA, our leader, who seemed have an affection for Native American Indian spirituality, tried to get us all to make contact with our “animal spirit guides.” We spent four weeks trying to do this. I knew inherently this was wrong and asked her how this was part of being Catholic. She replied that the Church wants people to pray in many different way. I refused to participate, though I was not disruptive about it. I learned later that none of the other people in my RCIA class went along with it either, we all just sat there and did not participate. She also had us pray to the “spirits of the four winds”.

At then end of this, I told the pastor. He was rather upset. After a year, he removed this person from RCIA responsibilities. Now she is the liturgical director. I love the priest, but he seems unable to get rid of these nutty people, I am now attending a different parish.
