Why do people look so poorley on the phrase “spirit of Vatican II”?" Yes, there were many good things that came out of Vatican II.

The problem is that what often goes as “The Spirit of Vatican II” is the promotion of indifferentism, abuses and the watering down of dogmas.

Alot of people pushed forth changes on the Church after Vatican II that trampled over traditions and offended some. They justified almost everything they did as being “in the spirit of Vatican II”, even though much of it had nothing to do with Vatican II, and some of it was outright heresy.
Vatican II made many changes to the Church, but it didn’t order jack hammers to marble altars, radicals to write their own prayers to substitute for the words of institution, or songs by the Beatles to be played at Mass. Those things were done by some claiming “the spirit of Vatican II”.

Seriously though, change is always difficult especially since we never know the outcome before hand.
Vatican II has become sort of a lightening rod for all that makes some folks unhappy about the church.
We will never know if any changes wrought by Vatican II were the cause of problems or were the problems just symptoms of what was going on in the wider world.
That is the problem with problems…you never know about those you prevented from occurring

I don’t think people have problems with the real “Spirit of Vatican II” it’s the liberally spinned spirit people don’t like.

Because the phrase has been so sorely abused. Vatican II was a GREAT coucil. Its documents were largely ignored, or the victims of selective understanding by “pastors” with personal agendas and a desire to implement false interpretations. Poor translations, inclusive language, the virtual disappearance of latin and chant in the liturgy, a great diminishment of reverence for the blessed sacrament, displacement of the tabernacle, loss of much of our “catechesis through images” (stained glass, statues, etc.)…I could go on and on.
I’m sure that some misguided souls felt that these changes would make the Church seem more attractive to non-Catholics. I fear they’ve alienated many Catholics, and given non-Catholics no reason to think they should come to the “Lite.”

It is my experience that the folks who go on and on about the “spirit” of Vatican II - don’t give one hoot about what actually HAPPENED at Vatican II.

Or what about people who underrstand what the Vatican II was about, and are recognizing that the spirit which led to the council and it’s proceedings were correct, however what came forth was skewed. So i think it appropraite to recognize the Spirit of Vatican II

Well…if you want to nail down what the “spirit” of the council was- wouldn’t it be what it’s original purpose was?
I’ve read the purpose of the council was to “open the doors to Christ” And that is exactly what they attempted to do.
I fail to see, however, how this “spirit” is supposed to justify the changes that many progressives are proposing.
It is just a way for them to “spin” their agenda.
