Can someone please explain the difference between the soul and the spirit? I heard an evangelical preacher say there was a difference, but he did not elaborate. TIA

Well in the west this division has been lost but its still alive and well in the east. Im going to borrow a lot from Bishop Kallistos Ware from the Orthododx Way. Heck I will even copy it for you

The spirit or spiritual intellect is thus distinct from mans reasoning powers and his aesthetic emotions , and superior to them both.”
So basically the soul is the logic part of you and the Spirit it the part that already knows or perceives the eternal because logic can not define or limit the eternal.

My understanding is that a Spirit is that spaceless and partless being that can know and love.
A soul is the life principle of a body. (Even plants have souls.)
But man is the only creature where his soul is a spirit. (Death is the separation of a soul from it’s body.)
May I recommend a good book to you; Theology for Beginners, by Frank Sheed. He explains souls and spirits quite well.

When God first created man and woman, they were created in perfect innocence and justice. However tempted by Satan, Adam and Eve forsook their loving relationship with God in deference to selfishness and lack of trust in the Creator.CC293…We do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. The first sin of disobedience resulted in injury to the spiritual nature of humankind. Hence, the original sin attributed to our first parents wounded the nature of our first parents and their progeny.
Therefore the Church teaches we inherit our spiritual nature from our parents that is it pre-exists from the time of Adam** and is transmitted through them in a fallen state.
Our soul on the other hand is I believe the essence of who we are personally, that is the immaterial aspect or essence of a human being, that which confers individuality and humanity, often considered to be synonymous with the mind or the self ***and which come into existence at the time of conception. ***
