Hi all!

First off, Happy New Year to you all and wishing you many blessings in 2012!

I have a feeling that we’re going to be hearing quite a lot about the convergence of “Doomsday Prophecies” over the next few months (Mayans, I-Ching, Web Bot Project, etc.) that predict major disaster(s) sometime in 2012.

As fellow Catholics, what, in your opinion, do we need to do to “armor up” our minds and spirits so we don’t drift into negative thinking when we’re confronted by this kind of news?

In short, how best to stay positive about the future so we can reassure our families (especially children who will likely hear about these things)?

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut! 🙂

I actually have a weird way of combating this negative doomsday thinking with a bit of ‘negative’ thinking of my own.

It’s goes like this. I imagine one of the many apocalyptic scenarios I find myself in various video games, TV shows, movies comics etc. I imagine myself as one of the survivors in a strange, desolate world with remarkable gifts that enabled my survival.

Then I tell myself: “Face it. No way 2012 is gonna be that awesome. XD”

I would say that knowledge is the best armor when it comes to this doomsday stuff. Learn as much as you can about what these so called ‘prophesies’ say, only then can we combat them with the truth.

Start off with this… The Mayans never said that the world was going to end in 2012 thats just simply when there calendar ended. Their calendar may have ended then for many reasons, such as: they were interupted by the invasion of the conquistadors, or they had finally been converted, or we hust havent found the rest of the calendars yet, or my personal favorite: maybe they just decided to do something else instead of continuing a calendar 1000 years in future 😃

In order to combat the enemy one must be familiar with all the ways in which he may strike.

Oh! And happy New Year to you too! 👍

“But of that day and hour no one knoweth, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.”

Matthew 24:36

Better yet, read and study all of Matthew 24 for a better understanding and for the context. It’s basically saying that there will be all kinds of false warnings and false prophets, but the Second Coming is going to be a surprise that no one will expect. In which case, today would be more likely than all of next year. 😛

Make a self-sustaining boat or spaceship just for the benefit of the doubt. 😃

You don’t need armor! Just the “off” button. Turn that **** off!

Forget about predictions made by the mayans and other groups. Their calendar ends on that date, but this means nothing to us. The end was predicted so many times so far, and still nothing. We must put our trust in God, not in pagans, occultists, new age absurdity, etc…

"But of that day and hour no one knoweth, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone." (Matthew 24:36) Douay-Rheims Bible

"But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up." (2 Peter 3:10) Douay-Rheims Bible

Only God knows when the end will happen. The Bible tells us this.

Doom prophesies have been around since the dawn of man. They are a distraction from the work of living and growing. The best spiritual armor against these things is a steady faith, regular liturgical attendance and faith.

Economic doomsayers are a different situation; many times their predictions do come true mainly because those happenings are the work of man rather than of God.

I wouldn’t pay much attention to this but i always found approved Catholic prophecies a bit weird such as the 3 day’s of darkness in which 2/3 of the world is meant to perish and other’s about the “Great Catholic Monarch” who will conquer the world and precede the Anti-Christ, almost seem’s to contradict each other as each prophecy explain’s what the world situation will be like when these event’s take place and pretty much describe’s today

I would say that even the economic variety isn’t so special. The worst that an economic ‘doomsday’ has ever given us was mass war and those things have existed since the dawn of man as well.

The 20th century war’s are currently the worst in human history, never before has so many perished in war and at such a scale

Maybe look at it from another perspective? The end of the world, the beginning of heaven! I’m not concerned about the end of the world, I am looking forward to it. Isn’t that what we are working toward, and looking toward? The second coming of Christ? Or am I completely misunderstanding?

Such an assumption needs an entire volume of statistics to back it up. Have you even considered the percentages of deaths in our recent wars in relation to their respective populations?

Mind you, I’ve seen too many debates on how the recent conflicts are better or worst than the previous ones. My only point is that we’ve already been there, done that.

I’d wager some people said the same thing you did about WW2 as well.

In the end, we’re still here. We’ve moved on. It’s how it has always been.

These things come around every few years or so. I believe, they’re mainly the result of a lack of God in people’s lives (if they don’t believe in Him, then they’re going to believe in something). Sometimes these theories have scientific backing (Y2K, or the theories on climate change) and sometimes they are purely prophetic (like this 2012 thing, or back last April when the world was also supposed to end).

The key here is to recognize that the fear is coming from Satan, alone. Do not study these theories too much and do not fall victim to their “scientific” justifications… that is Satan’s trap. Don’t forget that science is how we (as a society) have reasoned that the earth’s population needs to be reduced and that a baby’s breath is a toxic chemical!
