Hello,

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I have a question on the spiritual authority of Godparents. I pray for my God Daughter daily, but with the escalation of evil in this world, I really want her to be consecrated to Mary.

I know the spiritual realm operates on a hierarchical basis (God has authority over everything, angels over humans, humans over the animals, etc.) In the family, the parents have authority over the children, so a parent can legitimately exercise that authority by giving their child over to God (I’ve already shared a consecration prayer with her mom, which she will say).

I guess I’m just wondering if I, as her God Mother, can do the same? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Tara

Not sure, but as a God parent, you’re authority on such matters does not come about unless the parents are unable to be there for the child.

I am far from an expert on this but as far as I can tell you have some spiritual authority over them. You should continue to pray for her daily. In addition to that make sure she is learning the faith as well as being a present example of a good Christian.

One idea you may want to look into if you haven’t already is Fr. Michael Gaitley’s 33 Days to Morning Glory which is a 33 day self-retreat followed with a consecration to Mary. If it’s a possibility you could do the retreat your Goddaughter and the rest of her family.

I will keep her within my prayers.

I’m really curious about these because I am also a Godparent. Do Godparents really have spiritual authority other than being witnesses to their infant baptism?

They’re suppose to educate the child in the faith, should the parents be unable to.

Baptism is a sacrament of faith, and infants are Baptize out of the faith of the parents, who promise to raise the child in the faith. The Church takes this serious enough that Godparents are required to take the parents place should the parents be unable to.

That all being said, until very recently, its become more of a social event than a sacrament and even today, there is still more of a social element to it.

How about in Church Weddings, do the Wedding Godparents also have some responsibility too?

Wedding Godparents ?

Never heard of such a thing, and I would think there is no responsibility by anyone other than the couple being married.

For your information angels do NOT have authority over humans.
