Whenever anyone is unavoidably prevented, then so long as he preserves a good will and holy desire for Communion, he will not lose the benefits of the Sacrament. For anyone who sincerely desires it may on any day and at any hour make unhindered a Spiritual Communion with Christ to the health of his soul.
“The Imitation of Christ,” Book 4, Chapter 10

Is this true? How do we make a Spiritual Communion?

Just say this, from Saint Alphonsus Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things and I desire to possess Thee within my soul. Since I am unable now to receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace Thee as being already there, and unite myself wholly to Thee; never, never permit me to be separated from Thee.

St. Teresa was wont to say to her spiritual daughters: “As often as you hear holy Mass, although you be unable to communicate sacramentally, you can make a spiritual communion, which is of great value.” The Council of Trent requires for a spiritual communion an ardent desire, lively faith, and fervent charity. How often shall we communicate spiritually? As often as God inspires the holy desire, at any time, but especially at Mass, at Benediction, and at Visits. No particular form is required. With a contrite and loving heart, we may simply say: “Come, dearest Jesus, come into my heart; come and satiate my longing; come and sanctify my soul; come, my sweetest Jesus, come.”

We read in the lives of some of the saints how Our Lord, to satisfy their burning desire to receive the Holy Eucharist, communicated Himself to them in miraculous ways, as by going from the priest’s hand to St. Catharine of Sienna, and to blessed Imelda, or piercing through the breast of St. Juliana Falconieri, or as by the hands of angels or of His blessed Mother to St. Bonaventure and St. Stanislaus. In various ways and by signal miracles, Jesus has manifested His approbation of spiritual communion.

This may have kept me alive for decades, but I have found that recently, dealing with church red tape, that it is no longer helping me spiritually. I feel Jesus there, in the tabernacle at adoration, but not being able to commune at Mass leaves me dying a little each Sunday. Its been 3 years and my journey back towards my Catholic roots have left me dry and dying. I was finally invited by one parish priest to come up during communion for a blessing, but I am so spiritually empty I can not for fear I will faint. I would have happily done that 3 years ago, but I have become nothing more than a shadow, without substance.Every Sunday, it gets worse. I sink down into the pew during communion, my eyes well up with tears as I feel the procession of souls go up for communion. I leave Mass emptier and emptier. I truly feel that one day I will simply cease to exist right there, sitting in a pew.

Please start praying to our blessed Mother. Talk to her frequently in church and out of church. Talk to her as your loving mother about anything. And especially dedicate and place your body and soul into her hands and heart. Tell her to take you and nourish you back to health.

Then get her miraculous medal, have it blessed, and always wear it in her honor. This makes you her special shrine and she will care for you. O please don’t pass this up. She won’t let you down.

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.

I always pray the Spiritual Communion when I cannot receive Communion.

Don’t ever stop going to Mass.

‘If you practice the holy exercise of Spiritual Communion a good many times each day, within a month you will see yourself completely changed.’

St. Leonard of Port Maurice

‘More and more did the love of God, and my fear of him and faith increase, and my spirit was moved so that in a day – from one up to a hundred prayers, and in the night a like number; besides I used to stay out in the forests and on the mountain and I would wake up before daylight to pray in the snow, in icy coldness, in rain, and I used to feel neither ill nor any slothfulness, because, as I now see, the Spirit was burning in me at that time.’
