Dear friends,
Please keep me in your prayers. I’m in such a state of dryness and apathy. For the last several years I was very committed to spiritual readings, prayer, adoration, daily Mass when work allowed, etc. Now for the past several months, almost year, I feel dead to the Faith. Deep down I love God so much. I love Him for never giving up on me when I gave up on myself. He’s blessed me with a wonderful family, a good parish, and a good job. I couldn’t ask for a better life. And yet, I’ve lost any desire for the things I used to do. I hardly read Scripture any more and when I do, it’s just words on a page. My prayer is so dry and meaningless. Mass is not as deep an experience as it used to be. In fact, yesterday I was wishing I didn’t have to go but I did. Thankfully I have a husband and children who wouldn’t give me the option to not go! Where I used to go to confession once a month, I now let months go by. I haven’t been to confession since December.

I’ve heard of the dark night of the soul but I fear so much that what I suffer is not that but that I’ve lost the desire to love and serve God, to be with Him. Sometimes I even feel doubt about Jesus and what is in Scripture.

How I long for what I used to have. Please pray for me that whatever this is, I will not give up on God and on my Catholic faith. I’m very afraid.

WitnessToHope,

I know reading may not have the appeal it used to, but may I suggest finding a copy of the book “Come Be My Light”, the private writings of Mother Theresa. She knew very well what you are going through. I suspect this book may be a great inspiriation for you and perhaps a healing too. God bless you.

Most gracious God, WitnessToHope is going through a great spiritual dryness, a desert wandering that feels like 40 years even if it hasn’t been that long. Please help WitnessToHope to know and trust that you are present and active in spite of the dry feeling - and that you are there to help endure until the promised land is reached. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

May Blessed Teresa of Calcutta intercede for you. I was going to recommend the same book that the previous person did.

God is always with you.

Peace

It’s more than likely Dark Night. Don’t worry and keep marching on toward God…keep with the sacraments. Force yourself to do it. I’m going through the same thing. You just have to make yourself do it for love of God.

Dear Lord, please bless WitnesstoHope with lasting endurance and hope in you. If it is your will to keep her from emotional consolation in this trial, reinforce her faith and all other graces necessary to her so that she may persevere until the end and bring about the most glory to you. Thank you, Lord.

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen.

WitnessToHope,

I’ve only read “Interior Castles” by Teresa of Avila (Mirabai Starr’s translation is lovely and an easy read). You might be experiencing "Dark Night of Senses or Soul.” I’m not an expert on this topic.

There are some posts regarding Dark Night on CAF, which I found interesting to read. They assisted me in understanding a little bit of what a relative of mine was going through.

I am sorry you are suffering. While it does not seem so, I feel that we are closest to Jesus in this difficult time, reminding me of his Way to the Cross.

Through the intercession of St. Teresa of Avila, I ask that God provide you with an increase in love, faith, courage, and perseverance as you experience this dryness.

Not sure if “Footprints in the Sand” will help, but it has helped me in the past. I provided a link below.

Try not to be too hard on yourself.
Lenten love and blessings,
Kathleen

In our spiritual journey, some time we’ll be in such situation. All saints experienced it e.g. St. Teresa of Avila, St. Teresa of Lisieux, St. John of the Cross, and Mother Teresa. (May be you are saint too). But you should know that in that situation God strengthen us and give us more graces. So let us keep praying.
