Spiritual Darkness

I have a close friend who is expressing what I term as ‘Spritiual Darkness’…

He’s not feeling God’s hand in his life at this time.

I’m looking for some good material to give him about these dark times. I told him that As we move closer to God, God will pull away to keep us on the track moving ever closer to him. This is a growing process to keep is grounded in our faith and love of God.

Any ideas to help???

I don’t know where your friend is spiritually, so its kind of hard to know what to recommend.

If he’s relatively new to the faith, I would recommend
“Open Mind Open Heart,” by Fr. Thomas Keating.

Of he’s been involved spiritually for awhile, get him a

copy of “The Dark Night,” by St. John of the Cross,

or go here to read it on line;

Look carefully at the life of Christ. Every challenge we face, Christ faced, in His own way. He could’ve quit, but He didn’t. He knew He was going to suffer horribly and be killed. He dreaded this, but put His fate in the hands of God, and marched forward, bravely. He taught truth to those whom society hated and mistreated, and died for it. He was surrounded by corrupt power which hated goodness, and schemed to kill it, without remorse, without shame, although it was ostensibly a ‘religious’ power. He faced temptation constantly, but remained faithful in His total devotion to God. We must ‘let go’, and give it all to God. Our only requirement is to imitate Christ as best we can. Everything else will fall into place. That doesn’t mean ‘everything will turn out well’, by human standards. No…we might even die for being disciples of Christ. Nonetheless, discipleship is our only concern.
