I have only been a Catholic for a little over two years and now I am at a spiritual dead end that is crushing the life from me. As a result I feel like I need to take a break from the church… to get away from it for a while to re-evaluate things.
I tried so hard to be a good Catholic Christian, however I now feel that doing so took an aggressive edge off of my character that has now cost me my job. In trying to be Christ-like and kind to everyone I was percieved at work as being weak. As a result I was laid off last month at a job I loved where I worked for over 16 years.
I have yet to find another job. I’ve had a couple of leads, but they were little more than pie-in-the-sky good intentions from friends. The leads evaporated quickly. I’m facing the real possibility of having to take a menial job far below my previous salary. As a result I’ll have to move. My entire life has been disrupted. If a hurricane had blow my job and house away I don’t think I’d feel this bad because then I wouldn’t be so alone. Here I am, on a beautiful sunny day, surrounded by prosperity and yet I’m so depressed at being a utter failure I can barely function.
I cannot pray… I feel empty when I try. I almost walked out of mass last Sunday because it all seemed so hollow and pointless. The love I once felt from and for God is now gone. I feel like I have been abandoned. Having no family and only a limited circle of friends I have no one to turn to. I went to my doctor and he is weaning me off one type of anti-depressant and onto another, but I don’t see much change.
“Keep praying!” people say. “I’m praying for you!” Yeah, like it does much good. I see no results.
