I seem to have been bombarded my whole life with sort of the “fast food” of spiritual direction.

I’ve gone to Mass and confession and gotten advice there, I suppose, and then there’s the almost incessant drumbeat of “pray the rosary” – although this is primarily an element of spirituality in the Roman Rite. There must be other elements of spirituality.

I’m lucky if there is an old fashioned parish mission anyplace in my hometown.

Where would I even find a spiritual director? What are the qualifications of a spiritual director? Why would anyone, as I just heard on EWTN radio, go to a spiritual director for 9 months? What is the goal of having a spiritual director? The person said that they hired a spiritual director.

On this particular program, someone said a person is a “fool” to try to be their own spiritual director.

Your spiritual director is the Holy Spirit. A spiritual director will help you discern what the Holy Spirit is telling you.

We believe conversion is a lifelong experience.

😆

I think the bigger fool is the one who wastes time in searching for one.

There exists no spiritual director/direction outside of the Holy Spirit and the Saints that came before us. Sure there are saints all around us, but they have no time for us as they seek their own sanctification.

I think most people fall between these two points of view. Not everyone needs regular spiritual direction on an indefinite basis, but many people would benefit from it at some point in their lives, and still others do fine without it.

I agree that ultimately it’s the Holy Spirit who guides. 🙂 As imperfect beings, however, we don’t always hear the Holy Spirit, or we misunderstand what the Holy Spirit tells us. A spiritual director can help us see when either of those situations exist.

Some saints had spiritual directors. Some were themselves spiritual directors. The pursuit of holiness doesn’t necessarily include spiritual direction, nor does it necessarily exclude it.

yes, they pop up on the right side of the TV screen I didn’t see anything in the previews that seemed to match my questions. Heavens no, I didn’t read through long chains of comments.

But, i appreciate your concern.

OK, so I went to this thread you pointed to. Here’s one of the comments

This looks like a good website to investigate for folk who are interested. I just came across it, but have yet to look closely at it

WELL, it was the people on EWTN radio that maintain that website who gave me the curiosity about spiritual directors IN THE FIRST PLACE, and the lady partner on this venture is the one who said that SHE PAID for NINE MONTHS of weekly spiritual direction. She was the one that I was referring to in the OP.

I started THIS thread to get a SECOND OPINION about the matter, if I might say so, but the advice I’m getting is turning out to be pointing in a circular motion.

But, thank you to all for your comments.

Told 'ya so. There ain’t no bona fide spiritual direction. It’s a cruel hoax. Been searching for years. Go read what the Saints and Doctors of the church have written. That has been my spiritual nourishment.

Yes, when threads are open for opinions, get in line for a merry-go-round.😎

Yes there is “real” spiritual direction, as any Jesuit will tell you.

OP- it almost sounds like someone may have been talking about doing the 19th annotation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

It is 30 week(about 9 months) retreat, where a director is required.

I have a director. Would be happy to discuss with you privately. PM me if you would like…
