excuse my ignorance, but how should one go about choosing a spiritual director, and what does one talk with a spiritual director about? basically i do not know anything about spritual directors, odd for a person who is discerning the priesthood i know

Spiritual directors will help guide you on your inward journey to your true self. Most have formal training (including Stephen Ministers, Priests and other lay professionals) to listen and help you to explore deeper spiritual matters. As the door to deeper spirituality is frequently opened by crisis they can help you navigate the emotional context through the lens of the Gospel and often their own experiences.

I’ve had several “spiritual directors” in my lifetime. My cheif citeria are 1) do we have an easy mode ofcommunicton 2) does my potential director clearly walk the talk, and 3) is the state of awareness (not accumilation of book knowledge) clearly higher thatn mine. The on’e I’ve been happiest with are like piano teachers. They can tell from my voice what’s up, and deal in universals more than dogmas. In other words, I’ve always been interested in someone who can make me aware of my inner workings, so I can “drive my own cear” as distinct from someon who simply reminds me of the rusles of the raod, as helpful as that might be. After all, I might have a “mechanical breakdown” when my advisor is unavailable, and have been very grateful for ahving a set of tools pertinent to my own vehicle of soul as distinct from widgets tht don’t help, I have been extraordinarily blessed in these matters, due, I am sure, to choosing carefully.
