Spiritual director?

I have always been taught that a spiritual director needs to be a priest. Is that correct? Also, how does one find a spiritual director? I would never feel comfortable with my pastor in this role, but the nearest other priest is forty miles or more away and he takes care of three parishes. Is this something where I am expected to ask my pastor, just like I have no other option for confessor, despite my personal discomfort with him and my disagreement with some of the things he says? (Such as how a sin is never mortal unless it is habitual.)
 
No, a spiritual director does not have to be a priest. You may ask your pastor to recommend one to you, but you are under no obligation to do so.

Your diocese may keep a list of qualified SDs. Contact their offices for assistance.

Other possibilities include religious communities and retreat centers. Persevere in your search, but be patient as well. Finding the right SD can take some time.

I highly recommend Opus Dei spiritual direction, confession and meditations. Just go to opusdei.org and click on contact and ask them for the nearest Opus Dei center for men or women (depending on your sex). Don’t forget to tell them your address. They will reply.
 
Long ago I had to read the book: “The Practice of Spiritual Direction” by Barry and Connelly.

Great book. It gives you a good idea of what SD should do for you.
